Blinkers aka turn signals giving me grief...

Well, tonight I was coming home from work and was merging into the left lane, but alas my blinkers did not turn on! I'm wondering if there is a short somewhere... Where are good places to look for shorts that may be affecting my blinkers?

The fuse is fine, BTW, that's the first thing I checked.

Thanks

Bad switch on the column, bad relay (not sure if this would kill only one side though), both bulbs (front & rear) blowing out at the same time (freak incident but theoretically possible)... What happens when you try the hazards?

Most likely there is a bunch of fuzzy gunk on the switch contacts inside the column like Shane said.

The hazards are working fine. I will check the column tomorrow morning. Thanks again.

Did you check the blinker fluid? J/K LOL

Sounds like everyone nailed it already, so I figured I'd try and get a laugh or at least a smile.

Question

Hmm, I went out today and the blinkers were working for a small bit... Then they stopped. I have yet to tear into my steering column... These turn signals have been giving me problems for a while now... I replaced a burnt bulb about three weeks ago, it looks like I should have replaced the whole damn thing. :pat:

BTW, my blinker fluid is topped off...

You don't need to replace anything. Just wipe the dirt away from the contacts of the switch. Your emergency flashers work, correct? That is even more evidence that dirt on the contact is the cause if your problem.

Please don't be driving around with no signals. As a motorcyclist I get really pissed when people make un-signaled turns and lane changes. It's just dangerous. The other motorists and pedestrians are not psychic. Not signaling is rude and dangerous.

Oh yeah, its illegal also.

Kill a biker = go to prison.

some strange problems appeared for me a while back. VERY strange ones. for example, my blinkers would remain on, and my parking lights would come on whenever i stepped on my brakes

turned out that it was my trailer taillight converter box shorting out, my neighbor said they were built very cheaply, and cut the wires

Don't worry jx, I am not on the road unless I absolutely NEED to be, and I use the proper hand signals. I just hope people know why my arm is hanging out the window...

Ok guys I have a 1980 STD cab 4x4 with alot of mods. (3.8 tubo grand national engine, air locker, 2 in. body, 4 in suspension) and my blinkers and warning flashers have stopped working again. I have had the headlight assembly switch changed 3 times already, (due to headlights staying on) I have finally got another control unit but it was used, and now the blinkers and warning flashers have stopped working. I have no blinker sound. I don't know were the flasher relays are located or what they would look like (small, large etc.) I will try and hook up my old control unit and check the blinkers/ warning lights again. Any other possibilities would be helpful.

First off welcome aboard to YT. Secondly you are posting in the wrong section... this is for 95.5-2004 Tacomas and 1996-2002 4Runners. But to offer you advice I would check the fuse then the flasher relay. Other than that you'll need to start breaking out the wiring diagram and trace where you aren't getting power or ground.
