The pics are finally up. I have finished 3 wheels now and I am working on the 4th, all 5 will be sprayed.

The process was basically strip the factory clear off, sand them down with 180 grit, spray them w/ an epoxy primer, then base coat clear coat. It turned out well. A coworker helped me with the 1st two when it came to spraying them, and he has moved on to alabama of all places so I am doing the rest alone. The pics are from my 1st spray ever. Turned out well, a little orange peel but its good enough for a wheel.

neat rail setup to spray both sides and move the wheel with no damage to paint other than on the inside. I am going back to having the wheel lay flat. The backside still gets primered but that is it. The coverage of clear coat in the tight spots wasnt great and it was perfect on the two that were sprayed while laying flat.

on the truck, I am pleased with them. They look dark at night and very subtle in the day.

Looks good! If I remember correctly from your original post, it was your first time with a spray gun...Just curious, would you do it all over again?

 

I have 2 more to go, and I will probably lay the wheel flat next time. And clear out the debris better in the booth I am using. (its for rustproofing and spray in bedliners, but its newish so it works for now). A coworker from the body shop stopped by and checked them out and agreed that layin them flat would be a better plan. I can still get both beads of the wheel sprayed with way and thats one of the reasons I am doing this since they tend to chunk up and cause a slow leak.

I just need more time in there spraying things. Its just getting used to it all. I gotta say it was a great feeling considering I have done all mechanical work to all vehicles I have owned, but I laid out 3k for paintwork on the stang.

Looks very good. That wheel was a bad finish/design combo from the factory.
