ADD.. Automatic Axle Disconnect. If you have manual hubs you dont have ADD. ADD is for shift on the fly rigs. Your CV's are always engauged, and there is a two-piece shaft inside the axle, there is a sleve and a forked acutator that engauge when you select 4wd.

What year is your runner? There are no hubs on ADD rigs.

uhhhh.... my understanding was there were 3 types of hubs: manual, the kind with the dial you turn to lock it. auto hubs, which sucked, basically an automatic manual hub that didnt work very well. and then ADD, which means the hubs are always locked, but the front differential disconnects itself from the drive shaft.

First off. Auto Hubs vs ADD.

ADD is a diff disconnect, Auto hubs is a HUB disconnect similar to the old blazers.

AUTO hubs was an option in 84-89 4Runners, and 84-88 Pickups.

In 1989, they switched to ADD in the PICKUPS only! The 1989 4Runner still have Auto HUBS. In 1990, the 4Runner changed over to the ADD setup.

What 89macrunner has, is AUTO hubs. He will need the spindle nut conversion before Manual hunbs can be installed.

Going from ADD to manual hubs IS easy, because ADD uses manul hub spindles with a lock plate instead of hubs.

Going from AUTO hubs to Manual hubs is more difficult, becuase the locking mechanism in the actual spindle is different, and requires a spindle nut conversion.

I wouldnt call ADD hubs, as they have a drive flange in place of the hub.

Saves wear and tear on CV's, espically if you have increased angles from BJ spacers or tbar crank. You may also see a mpg gain on the fwy, but negligible in town.

And most folks dont switch, they just add hubs to the setup.

I don't think ADD will allow 4WD in reverse either. (Correct me if I'm wrong; Maybe that was auto hubs)

Where did you get an idea like that?

It works in reverse with anything... but some auto hubs, dont know about toyota, need you to go in revers to get them to disengage... ADD is not affected by direction, nor are auto or manual hubs.

i know my add works in reverse, ive used it ALOT!!!

we went down this trail that just ended and dropped off the side of the mountain. i was in the rear of the group, so i had to back up some pretty sandy hills, tried it in 2hi, just dug, so i put it into 4low and it just crawled up the hills.
