deck light?
Can someone post a pic of the rear deck light? I couldnt find the light but there is a vent of some sort in the rear left of the cargo area. Does anyone know what that is?

hahahahaha
That made my day.
I've owned my 4runner for 3 days now and I've discovered:
what a deck lamp is
that rusty rear wipers don't ever touch the window
my rear window doesn't work! (any of the functions!)
the previous owner liked Doritos and french fries!!!

The drivers side floor vents have a little open/close valve that you can open up for a lot more air. Just reach your hand under there by the vent and feel for it.

When the rear wiper sprayer stops working it's letting you know it's getting low.
The vent in the rear hatch compartment is just to vent air from behind the panels I'm figuring since it appear to have no other function.

Learned
On my 1992 4Runner the rear window would not go up/down.
I took the switch in the console out and cleaned it.
Then it started working.
Also, if the rear window does not go up/down make sure the window lock switch is not activated.
I LOVE THE REAR WINDOW THAT GOES UP / DOWN AND LETS AIR GO THROUGH THE VEHICLE.
THAT IS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I LOVE 4RUNNERS.
NO OTHER VEHICLES HAVE REAR WINDOWS THAT GO UP/DOWN.

That's my only gripe on the placement of switches in my 'Runner. When you have one in the center console it collects everyspill/bit of dust/road grime and kid goop that hits it and after a while they gum up too much to work. I had to clean the rear window switch in my '89 and it worked like new after that. Maybe a rubber switch cover is in order.

I learned that driving with the rear window down lets exhaust inside the car, even if you have all the other windows open.
I also learned that you don't have to molest your back panels to get a 5.25" speaker in the stock boxes, you just need a file, a hack saw, and a sharpie to mark the cuts.
I learned to live with all the squeaks and creeks, since there is really nothing wrong with the parts, and you will fight a loosing battle trying to fix them.

founder of the company was named Toyoda, but it is unlucky to name a company after yourself in japan, hence the name Toyota. why it is the way it is on some of the parts from the 80's is beyond me... that was a fair bit of time after the company was founded.

I learned that the previous owner had at least 2 large yellow dogs, and apparently no vacuum.
I learned that the driver's side inner wheel well was missing for a reason (stupid oil filter).
I learned that, for the perfect breeze, drop the rear window about 3" and open the sunroof as far as you want (good up to about 95deg in the summer).
Thanks C_W for reviving a super-old thread that's actually fun to read!

I found:
1) Power Steering fluid in the brake reservoir, leading to melted abs, melted lines, locked brakes, fried brakes, lots o $$$$$$$
2) The back seats don't work very well
3) I should have got one with a dif lock
4) It is much more comfy than my old truck

I found out that alot of people stare at my nice old first gen, especially other toyota owners, not because there is something wrong with it either. Ive seriosly gotten out and done like full vehicular inspections on the side of the road cuz people were staring at it like it was on fire or something.
