4WD engagement issues

Ive been reading thru the stickys and been 'searching' this topic for a week, but I still don't get it! 4runner is a 95, 3.0, 5 speed. When the shifter is put in 4H, the dash light comes on (between 2h and 4h) then goes off. Front wheels don not engage. With a friend helping, I put it in 4H, he then pulled the vacuum line (at the accuator on front diff) fron drivers side. He said it had a good vacuum at the hose. While this hose was off, the green 4WD dash light came on and stayed on. I was not able to jack it up or drive to see if it really was engaging. When he put the hose back on, the light went off. Any ideas what this means? Was it really engaged. When I get home this evening, I can jack it up , pull the hose and serif it is engaging. Thanks for any ideas.

My wires still appear to be connected. The only thing that changed was: the 4wd light in the dash came on when the drivers side vaccum hose was removed from the accuator.

I think I will remove the accuator this weekend to see if the fork is still moving on the little rod. It may just be stuck from not being used? It's worth a try.

so with one side of the vacuum lines off the actuator it then shows its in 4wd? it sounds like u have the vacuum lines on the wrong side. up on the fire wall on the passanger side take and switch them and then try it, hope that works if not then it could be a bad actuator.

It's possible they were switched. I just got this truck. The engine was rebuilt by a guy of questionable ability. So it would not surprise me if these were switched. I will try this tomorrow and report back. Thanks for the advice.
