3rd Member Swap - 4cyl to v6
Howdy y'all. A buddy of mine is doing a SAS and converting to D44 axles leaving his 4.56's free to me! He's got a '94 4Runner V6, 5-speed.
First off: is it worth the work to go from my 4.10's to 4.56's? I'm running 33's and any extra gearing will help I'm sure.
And 2nd, Is this a direct bolt up swap? Pull the axle shafts, bolt up the new 3rd and slide the axles back in? Same spline count, etc?

4.10's with 33's is not fun. Granted the motor being bored and the TRD cam help.... but it's not fun.
Just to confirm: The v6 and 4cyl use the same housing and same axle shafts?
Oh, and his '94 rear 3rd has a little 2 wire sensor on the top... what is that?

I've been tossing around the idea of installing a lunchbox locker (probably an Aussie) when I do the swap.
I do plan on SAS'ing it, running 35's, and going to 5.29's with selectable lockers, but we all know how the toy's steal from the pockets.... so I don't know if it's worth blowing the $250 or so on a lunchbox now or just waiting to lock it.

yes they use the same housings and shfts unless it is a elocker
and the two wires are the abs sensor you can just cap it with this

I had 4.56 with 33's and it was OK, but 4.88's now are better. If you're used to 4.10's, you'll be like a pig in slop with the 4.56's!
Lock the front and rear while you have the diffs out and you may realize you don't NEED an SAS and end up saving thousands of dollars in the long run ...

If I invest the money into an ARB right now for the 4.56's and have them set at the local gear shop.... can I pull the ARB out and reuse it in a set of 4.88's or 5.29's - whatever I end up with? If I'm looking at the pictures right, an ARB mounts to the ring gear which is always 8" for the rear axles isn't it?

Steve get er done!! That swap is easy. It's not hard at all to pull the rear third. The front IFS is a little more tedious though.

The rear is easy - I agree. I've had it out before to change the seal.
I won't have it done before this weekend.... but I'm gonna do it. Free gears!
