W40 to W58 Transmission Swap Information
Hi, longtime lurker, first-time poster.
I have a 4th Gen 1988 2WD 22R with a W40, and my clutch is almost toast. I've been looking into 5-speed transmissions and it seems like a W58 would be the best option for me. If anyone has any experience with this swap, please let me know; I have a few questions.
1. Length. Would I be able to reuse my drive shaft?
2. Bellhousing. Would I be able to reuse my bellhousing? My concern is that the starter and slave cylinder would not be on the right sides.
3. Transmission Mount. I believe I would need a transmission mount from a 5-Speed truck to accommodate the new transmission, but I'm not sure exactly what to look for.
4. Shifter Location. Am I going to have to create a new opening in the floor of the cab?
5. Speedometer Gear. Obviously not a huge concern, but would it fit and continue to be "accurate"?
I've read that there is more desirable version of the W58 with a steel sandwich plate. I drive like an old man, so I assume I wouldn't need the extra durability. What should I look for in a used transmission. Is there a recommended method of sourcing them? I don't plan on doing the swap myself as I don't have a garage and its the rainy season in Oregon, so I want to make sure I do all the research before I put anything on the shop. I bought this truck in 2008 with just under 30,000 miles, now it has about 120,000. I want to make sure I'm doing everything as well as I can, so thank you very much for taking the time to read this post!
