temperature gauge @ 1/2 always

My temp gauge worked just fine before I did an engine rebuild, ever since, the gauge reads at half way either being cold or boiling.
Would it be a sensor problem or something in the wires?

Im not 100% sure, but read that a wire on the back of the cluster can be off and it shows a bad reading. worth a shot.

Just search cluster temp gauge or something like that. Can't remember the exact details. I read it when I was searching for something about a year ago.
