Swapping 4 SPEED to 5 SPD or new axle gears?
I"m new on the forum so I hope I'm not goofing up here. Long time fan though.
I recently acquired an 82/83 22r in a 1900 lb resto-mod car with a 4 speed manual that the seller told me came out of a early 80's Toyo 2wd truck. I think I have a synchro going out and I also want to add a hwy gear. The gearing is so low in first gear that I practically have to shift before I can hit 15 mph. I'm thinking about swapping it for a 5 speed but I NEED HELP FIGURING OUT WHICH TRANSMISSIONS WOULD BE AN EASY SWAP. Any suggestions on how to determine which year model 5 speed manual trannys will work?
Also, ditto question for swapping out the rearend. How do I determine which axle I have and which gears will work? How about recommended sources on where to buy?
Thank you for your time!

First you should figure out what transmission you have. Marlin Crawler's website has good info and pics, though maybe not for 2wd gearboxes.
IIRC, the 4-speed and 5-speed boxes (L-series and G-series; you probably have an L50 but that's a guess, that you could confirm with some Google Image searches) have the same first four gear ratios.
Search for how to determine axle ratios. It involves a marker, lifting one wheel off the ground, turning it and counting the number of rotations of the driveshaft.

You'll want another L transmission for plug and play. you should have an L45 (4 speed shifter goes into tranny) L50 and L52 are 5 speeds.
Anything else will require fabrication. lots of write ups here about how too.
I know newer tranny's are longer than L series, so cross member either needs to be moved or you can add piece to mount trans mount. drive shafts will have to be modified.
