Speedo cable issue

Whats up guys? Im new to the forum here. Had a quick ques. So I have this 90 pick up 22re I swapped a 5 speed out of a 92 pick up. (elec. speedo) I used my old speedo assembly. Everything worked great for about 50 miles then the speedo stopped working...I swapped the cable. still nothing. The gear on end of speedo cable housing looks good I wonder if its the gear inside the trans? I can spin it by hand and the gauge will read. Anybody ever swapped the gear in the tailshaft? Is it a pain? Its the only thing that makes sense. Thanks All.

If your sure the speedometer and the cable are good, then the only thing left would be the gear in the transmission. I have no idea whats involved in changing the that gear though.
