No start issue
My truck wont start. Heres whats up. Got power to all accesories, dosent matter if clutch is masshed or i push the no clutch button or both in unison when i turn the key to start everything dims each time i bump the start position, i ALSO get a clicking sound from the dash on the passenger side. I thought well must be the starter, so i swapped the starter. Still no start same symptoms. Ok must be the battery now i have a spare starter. So i first hooked up a spare new battery to jumper cables and same thing. So its not the battery. Could it be a faulty switch of some sort? Where should i start looking here? Ive never had this sort of problem...

Sounds like a poor ground .
Have they ever been upgraded ??
Voltage at the Battery ??
Voltage at the starter solenoid when in start position ??
Just where did the second starter come from ?? Not working out of the box it would not be the first one.

ok so i have 12.32 volts at the battery, I tried running a jumper cable to the + terminal of the starter from the battery with key in on position - no action, nothing happened except i bumped the starter and got sparks so i believe i have a solid ground. I cliped the jumper to the + terminal of the starter and turned the key - nothing but a single click from the dash not the starter. Had my girl turn the key while checking battery voltage - voltage drop to 11.4 and noticed what sounded like electricity shorting when she turn the key from the firewall under the hood. I dont believe the starter is the issue as the clicking im hearing is not the starter plunger hitting the flywheel. Any ideas?

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!! Gonna have to add a push button start, dont know what the real issue is though, anyone got a clue? I was touching the wrong terminal on the starter with the jumper cable, tried the little plug terminal and she started right up. Should i make a button or is this inexpensively fixed?

It doesn't sound like you figured it out. Don't go to Autozone just yet. We'll figure this all the way out. Did you jump the starter from you spare battery or did you jump the solenoid at your starter using your truck's battery and wiring? If you used a separate battery and jumper cables, hook your jumper cables to your truck's battery and see what happens. Just because you have voltage doesn't mean that your battery can supply the amps needed to crank the truck. If your truck's battery won't do it, then you have your answer. If it will, you'll need to examine examine your starter circuit.
I tell you what. Before we go too far, would you please describe exactly what you did in order to get it cranked, like what battery you used and what jumper cable or cables went to which terminal on the starter? I bet I could probably tell you where your issue is with that information.

I used the on board battery, no jumper battery. I used the red jumper cable from the positive terminal to the little wire plug in on the starter with the key in the run position she fired right up no hesitation. I believe the issue is in the ignition switch.

Take a look at your starter relay if yours has one. I didn't see where you mentioned the model you are working on. Mine is located under the hood above the passenger side fender. (89 4Runner V6) You will know it when you see it. Need to see if you are getting power to it and then from it when you turn the key. When you know whether or not it is working, you will be able to determine if the issue is the relay or if it's either upstream or downstream of it. I would imagine it would click if it was working however I've never paid any attention to it as I have never had to troubleshoot it.
Take a look at this thread. Looks like some good info there regarding the starting circuit.

If it's clicking then you are almost there. Test the wire between the relay and the starter. There should be nothing else between the two. Test it up by the relay and if you have power there when cranking then replace that wire to the starter. If you don't have power there, suspect the relay and test it if you have a multimeter.
If the relay is clicking, you have a power signal from the ignition and theoretically rules it out as the problem.
I had a similar issue with mine after I first brought it home. Turned out to be the wire from the relay to the starter looked ok but when I took it off at the starter, the little ring terminal connection was just held on by about two strands of the wire. Crimped on a new terminal and away we went.
