New Head for Old 20R

Howdy,
I've got an old 1980 Pick-Up with the 20R engine. It's still a great FUN little truck to drive around and is a Great Little WORK TRUCK for hulling my dirt bike and fire wood. (it has a long bed which really comes in useful)

My question: Can I put a 22R Head on the 20R Short Block...???

The truck is starting to put out a little smoke. I'm thinking Valve Stem Seals. I've stayed up on the Valve Adjusting myself so I know the Valves are set right...!!!

The truck still runs strong: I've got a 32 Weber on it, pulled the EGR off, 3 inch lift, 15inch wheels & tires, custom front and back bumbers, fresh wihite paint job, seats out of a Sabb and the bottom end still sound quite, smooth, and strong.
NO REASON TO GIVE UP ON IT NOW...))
Thanks,
Rex M.

I would not change the head to a 22R. The head you have breathes better than the 22R. I have a 285 HP 22r motor built by L.C. Engineering and my motor runs a 20R head.

Hot Damn...285 hp.
Thanks for your input, I'll keep what I have and freshen up the old 20R head.
Thanks Again
Do you have additional pictures of your truck?

ya id like to see some dyno sheets for that one or else im callin BS. Number like that are possible with forced induction but a high compression 20/22r hybrid unlikly. As for Rex I would not recomend a 22r head. The reason people use 20r heads on the 22r is for more compression and for you it would do the opposite. A 20r head will not breath better without significant port and larger valves installed. Id look into a new 20r head, rebuild yours, or considering getting a used one off craigslist to rebuild so you have less down time. If your looking for more power consider installing a cam from EB since the head will be out anyway. Im fairly sure the 20r uses the same cam as a 22r

The engine is an L.C. Engineering Stage 5 pro stroker off road racing engine. The engine is completely race ready with larger valves, extensive head mods and cam with dual chain and special adjustable cam sprocket. The pistons are 10.5:1 with stroked crank and extensive block work. The header is SS race type going into a 3" exhaust. The flywheel is a 30 pound with dual clutch system. The stage 5 pro engines are capable of producing over 300 HP. The carb system is a dual modified 45 DCOE Webers in a ported / matched long run manidfold. Years ago I raced my truck with a TRD prepared 18RG race engine with twin Mikunis that produced 375 HP plus. Ivan Stewart used exactly the same engine from the same source. None of these engines use forced induction systems. Go to L. C. Engineering's WEB site, they will bulid anything you can afford.

Dude spare me...
There is no way you will get anywhere near 280hp with an N/A 22r and 10.5 compression, i dont care if its stroked to a 3.0. The big horse N/A 22r motors use lightened flywheels and crank... you have a crawler flywheel.... good idea for a 4x4 but it hinders horsepower...... the dual sidedrafts rob torque...... your setup you described is a conflicting mess.
i have been building 22r and 20r engines for years and with the assistance of LCE.... sorry someone just called B.S. on you . BYE BYE
