Making 2002 4Runner SR5 a little more sporty

Some of you have seen my posts looking for nerf bars and what not. I've spent about 3-4 days reading over all this site and there's lot's of good info here. My eyes actually hurt from reading so much. I do have a couple of questions now....

I want to make this 2002 4Runner SR5 4WD more sporty. This is a daily driver that I don't off road (been there done that), so I'm just looking for a few cosmetics and some small performance enhancements. I have quite a bit of experience with the 3.4L as this is my third vehicle with that motor (1997 Tacoma, 1999 TRD Tacoma).

Questions:

What is the ISR mod? I keep seeing it mentioned, but a search didn't really pull up a "how to" on that.

I was considering headers, but after reading horror stories I've almost decided against them. I'd hoped the TRD headers were cheaper and improved since I owned my 99 Taco, but it appears not. The Edelbrocks looked the same as well. If there are suggestions here, I'm open to them.

So far I've ordered Ivan Stewart TRD Wheels from North Ridge, as well as the 02 Sport Edition tube steps (I've always hated these grocery getter running boards).

I'm planning the deck plate mod. I'm actually the guy that dyno tested it back in the day on my 99 Taco to prove it and the Amsoil filter were the way to go. I used to be heavily involved in Tacoma Territory and tested all kinds of stuff, but it seems my articles are no longer on the www.ttora-tn.com site???

I'm also going to be installing the Hella factory front fascia fog lights. Anyone got a source for the OEM PLUG IN switch? I don't want the one you have to wire. There is a plug behind my dash just for these lights so I need one that plugs in.

Thanks in advance,

ISR Mod write-up found in the "Tech Section". The tech section has tons of great write-ups:
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f130/intake-silencer-removal-mod-update-2002-4runners-75164/

OEM Factory fog switches are pricey, but IMO, they look good. They currently have 10 left on sale at PP (at bottom of page):
http://www.performanceproducts.com/C...?vehicle=29187

For cool accessories, check out Burtman's site:
https://www.burtmanindustries.com

(looks like his site is down for the moment. check it later.)

Hope this helps, and welcome to YT!

Thanks for the links guys.

Does anyone knos if this switch:
http://www.performanceproducts.com/...x?vehicle=29187

Is the one that fits the loose plug for the fog lights on SR5 models, or does it just have 4 metal prongs in the back for pluggling up spade connectors?

Most of the models I've seen with fog lights installed from the factory have the switch located on the headlight column mounted switch. It's like a collar that turns in addition to the head light switch. Anyone got info on that?

Also, what are the chances of finding a "Sport" edition hood? I'm wanting a scoop. I know they're just for looks, but they look great.

Will do. Anyone need a set of stock alloy wheels from a 2002 4Runner?

This is really all I have planned:

Replace running boards with Toyota tube steps from 02 Sport Model
Replace stock alloy wheels with TRD Ivan Stewart 16x8 alloys
Install Hella factory fog lamps in front fascia with stock fog light switch and wiring

Sport Edition hood with scoop (maybe)
Deck plate mod (maybe)
ISR mod (maybe)
Considered headers (probably not now that I've researched here)
Super Charger (out of the question with gas prices these days and all the crap you have to do to tune it)

the general consensus here is that the pain and cost involved w/ headers is not worth the 10hp you may gain. however, mated with an SC and a free flow exhaust is definitely worth it.

you may want to price compare those step tubes against stubbs standard sliders. i betcha if you stay here long enough, you will probably want to do some runs w/ the guys---and then you probably wished you bought sliders

I was the Charter Member TTORA TN Chapter president back in 1998 and have done my share of wheeling. I modified the hell out of a 1997 Tacoma Xtra Cab V6 and then traded it for a 1999 TRD Tacoma. I'm out of the wheeling game. (http://www.geocities.com/Baja/Canyon/2437/). That's the first website I ever built back in 98'. Now I run http://hooliganbiketech.dynup.net for my bikes.

As far as not searching, do a search for "ISR MOD" in your "search" button and see how many posts show up and see how many actually have info on how to do the mod. I got back 500 posts and after reading through 30 of them, gave up.

I originally found www.toyota-4runner.org and NOLI sent me this way as he said there was more useful info here. So far I've found some good info, I just wish the site was a little better organized forums wise.

I'll check with Evan on the switch. Hopefully they'll know which one it is as they seem to be coming extinct these days.

dude, relax. i am not trying to poo poo on your wheeling credentials, man!

about our site not being well organized, frankly speaking, im gonna disagree with you here on that point. and especially coming from t4r.org, i think our site far above and beyond what they offer in terms of site organization and content. so stick around and poke around the site a little more before you give that kind of opinion, alrighty?

Most people get around the same gas mileage with a S/C. But remember: with the fuel mods and tuning equipment needed to make it run correctly, you need to spend about $5k... not the little $1800 for just a supercharger.

No worries. Just letting you know I'm not some noob. From an organizational stand point, I'm comparing this:

https://www.yotatech.com/forumindex.php

to this

http://www.1000rr.net/vb/forum.php

It may be an unfair comparison because there are so many derivations of the Toyota truck and 4Runner, however. I just found when searching, I wasn't sure which forum to search in. I'd search in the 3rd Gen 4Runner section, but not find much, then I'd do a global search and get back 500 posts. Over time I'm sure I'll sort it all out, but I'd think 4Runner, Tacomas, Land Cruisers, etc would each warrant their own forum sections, but hey I'm just the no it all new guy right? :pat:

speedy,

gotcha. the advantage that the site you listed above is that its dealing with a single specific type (if i am not mistaken) whereas we are dealing with nearly the entire line of toyota off road vehicles.

nevertheless, you can search by specific generations:

- hit "search" and then click the "advanced search" text link
- move the drop down arrow to the "3rd gen 4runners" in the "search in forums" section (right side)
- type in a key word

that should help you out to narrow the search results.

by the way (and for whatever reason), the site is very heavy in 3rd gen 4runner content, so you are in luck.

also, go through the tech section. there's a ton of content mods in there for 3rd gens

Yeah, the one PP is selling has prongs on the back for a spade to connect too. I've got a couple of them if you want to see a pic of the back.

And what you're referring to about wanting a sport hood is what we guys w/ them refer to you as having "Sport Hood Envy". I used to have this problem, until I bought a Sport Edition!

But yes, Sport Hoods are easily obtainable...depending on your money situation. You can buy them at salvage yards or better yet buy them from your local toy dealer. You have to buy the hood and scoop itself. (It's not a one piece unit). Also, the hood isn't what's really expensive, it's painting it that cost some cash. But the good news is, they bolt right up!

So could I just buy a scoop and put it on my SR5 hood or are there other differences?

No.

Let me clarify my previous statement. (Even after I read it, I was confused.) The scoop itself is molded into the hood. That's all one piece. However the front of the hood scoop is a seperate piece. See the pic of my hood below. The ring around the scoop and the grille that you can't see. That's the extra piece:

[EDIT] And in my previous post when I said: but the good news is, they'll bolt right up, I meant the hood will bolt right up...didn't mean to imply the scoop bolts on top of the hood.
