Looking for low cost performance mods / 22re

About the 2 best mods for a 22re as for power is a cam and header with a 2 1/4 exhaust for the money. Then do the best you can for tuning by adjusting the AFM and bring timing up a bit. Other then that you are talking a lot of money to get one to make any power NA.
The best increase for the money is going turbo.

The 22re is like an old mule. It will carry what you put on it and can pull a little bit too;
But no matter how much money you spend training that mule, you still aren't going to be running in the Kentucky Derby.

hands down, cheapest improvement to the 89-95 22RE trucks has got to be a gear swap. sure you can open the 22re up with headers and intakes, but youre not gaining much pulling power, which is essentially what they lack. find an extended cab 4x4 in the scrap yard or for parts that is equipped with a 22re and an automatic trans...odds are it has 4.56 gears. piece of cake gear swap with a huge improvement, even over 4.10's.. as someone said "22RE's like to be run at WOT"...and i cant think of a better way to keep them there....
PS...been running NGK plugs for 20 years in these trucks and haven't found a better plug for them

first post 2007, 6 yr old thread. ?? ill join in. ngk, yes, the old regular basic plug. the newer ngk claim to fames, not so much. basic ac plugs work as good if not better. a 5th injector will get you a little more go as well!

These engines usually generate a lot of power-robbing carbon buildup around the intake valves, intake manifold, throttle body, and injector tips. Take care of those things first for the cost of a couple of cheap gaskets and a can of seafoam. I would personally take it a step further and get my injectors checked out.

as far as the 22re motor and low cost mods i can only recommend a 5th injector! bigger mass air flow, battery/air box flip (efi 22re), bigger/better air filter and carb tuning (22r), quality but basic plugs cap rotor wires, good exhaust, egr delete, proper gears. compression is to low to do much of a cam upgrade and if you shave the head to raise compression it just beats the crank and rods up. lets face it, theyre just small 4 cyl motors designed for pick ups, so dont expect much. keep it maintained and regear according to your intended use and tire size will be you best bet. i geared mine for normal road use (4.88) and added the 4.70 gear in the t/case and lockers for offroad. 22 r series are great motors known for longevity not power. however im not saying that if you were to build one from the ground up with enough money you wouldnt have an impressive motor, it just depends on how deep your pockets are. newr low mileage motors of today might have more tuning options with better results over the famous 22r /re

Great Thread Guys & Gals
There are some things I want to do to my 94 4x4 Ext cab. She gets me back and forth to work, my deer stand, and pulls a 87 bassmaster classic 373 to a couple of local lakes. It is completely stock and I am old enough to know the best way to drive it is with alot of TLC.
