K&N on 22re
Newb question:
I need a new air filter, should I buy a KNN or go with a aftermarket paper filter?
$50 vs. $12.
with the KNN, do I have to change any settings?(will it screw with any EFI stuff?)
KNN# 33-2009
pros, cons?
1985 4runner, 22re
thanks

1) K&N, not KNN.
2) K&Ns are known to gunk up the AFM, TB, etc with the oils required to help filtration, often damaging the AFM. That being said, I ran a K&N filter in my '93 for 20K miles before I realized it was a K&N filter (PO installed it, I was young and didnt know anything about vehicles). Once I found out, I didnt know you had to use oils, so I ran a K&N high flow without "proper" filtration for nearly 80K miles with no ill effects. I just cleaned it regularly with compressed air.
3)I have used aftermarket paper ones and, IMO, they are junk. All of them I have used (NAPA, Fram, CarQuest, etc) have let actual dust through and got the inside of my AFM dirty. Yes they are $10-$20. Thats why-
4)- I use Toyota OE paper filters. With all the dust and smoke here in the summer, I need lots of filtration. Deff best filter I have used. its about $30, but I know, and have seen the difference, between aftermarket and OE.

2) thats exactly what I was looking for. not sure how common it is to gunk up/malfunction efi stuff but its good to know that it is possible. my vehicle is old probably already has "gunk" building up inside intake/sensors, last thing I need is my air filter to contribute.
I wonder if some of the people with "gunking" issues over oiled their K&N? or if its bound to happen no matter what.
3) was hoping aftermarket papers filters would work(at least a specific one... the one from NAPA is , while the Fram works comparable to stock)
4) I'll most likely not f around and just go with the OEM, but $30? damn it
thanks

yes, most people over oil the K&Ns, but still, some will get inside your intake. Lots of people use them with no issues. I have been debating on running a K&N high flow in my '95 22re, but after using OEM, I decided against it.

First off K&N will not gum up anything if you are oiling them right. Second you never clean one with compressed air. You use water from a hose with no high pressure just straight from it. A specta filter that you can get at autozone are like a K&N but only like 20 bucks. Not as good but let more air through. I would buy a kit from LCengineering (the K&N one). Its a good kit and worth the cash.

didn't see a kit for the 1985 specifically. would this be a "kit" for a 85?

I have a stock motor(with stock exhaust, newer but stock).... would I really benefit from this kit? don't plan on "hotrodding" my motor in the future either, maybe a aftermarket exhaust.
figured over oiling would be the cause of the gunk build up(as I've over oiled the k&n on my xr400, but had no issues as all, of course its carbed and no sensors etc.)

oooh. you meant an entire K&N intake. I was talking about a drop-in filter. But still, same basic concept.
Really, you wouldn't benefit from either of those. MIGHT see a few more MPGs per tank, but that can be achieved by cleaning the blow-by out of the intake runners. You can also make your own "cold air intake" with pipes from like Home Depot or Lowes. Factory intake ducting is actually a "cold air intake" already. it gets outside air from just behind the headlight.

I was talking about drop in K&N (or aftermarket paper filter)in first post, Drunner mentioned the whole kit, which got me searching and thinking. I don't think the whole kit would benefit me enough to spend the extra dough.

IMO I think if you are going to spend the money on a performace aircleaner, dont get the one that drops right in. Get the cone that replaces your stock one. The idea is to get the max airflow. I have the cone on mine and I can tell the difference. Your motor is like a air pump the more air you can get through it the better and more efficient it runs. The K&N kit (I think its called a fipka kit) really goes together with a header and good exaust and mild cam. LCEngineering sells this kit and it fits 85-95 22re. Just my expierence on it.

I just put a k&n in my 02. didn't see a difference at all really in power. cleaned the maf with electrical spray and that made a big difference. Although i have almost 180,000 on her and i'm sure the original owner never cleaned it. But anyway if you don't over oil it i think you will be fine. And you won't ever have to buy another filter, how green is that. LoL !!!

I love my K&N cone filter. I got it from a friend used so I didnt pay the retail price. I use it so I don't have to spend $20 for a new air filter every time i go to the dusty desert I play in.
For me atleast; $50 paid once for K&N > $20 every time I go to the desert
Going to the desert 3 times has already "paid" for itself including the $12 cleaning and oil kit
