Gears

I am wanting to buy a used truck, I want stock gears, one truck I looked at has 35's on it, the owner says it has stock gears, is it possible to run 35's with stock gears?

It is possible to run 35s with stock gears but I would bet it is a gutless wonder. With 35s you would want 5.29 gears from all the research I have done. I like the looks of 35s on a truck, just dont want to get it that high to get in and out of for myself.

Thanks Terry, that's very helpful, another question; I am not sure if my 87 has stock gears or not, it came with 33's, I put 31's on it, could you mess something up if you run tires to small on a truck with gears? Another truck I inquired about that has gears, I asked if I could run 30's on it, they said the smallest I could go is 33.Hmm.

you can run smaller tires

but you'll be traveling slower than your speedometer says; your motor will need to be at a higher rpm to keep up with traffic -- probably not a good idea to cruise @ 70 mph and 5000 rpms all day long though.

some vehicles came with 31" tires from the factory, maybe those didn't have 4.10 gears stock, maybe came with 4.58, i'm not sure. but i'm pretty sure the information plate/sticker in the door jam will have that information.

your truck will run best when the differential gears are properly matched to the tire size. while the gears themselves are inexpensive, it's a considerable amount of labor. maybe search for a how-to to see if it's something you want to tackle.

i used to run 31s on my previous truck with stock (4.10) gears and it drove well. now i have 4.88 gears with 33s and it's great.

regarding the truck with 35s and stock gears -- you should have no problem selling or trading those tires to someone for 31s -- will put some cash in your pocket or get you newer tires. just something to consider.

It wont hurt to run smaller or larger tires, it will just make your speedometer off and be a power issue.

As a general rule of thumb, most came with 4.10s and you can run up to 31s. One one of my trucks the speedometer is slower by about 5mph. I am actually running 70 when the speedometer is saying 65mph.

4.88 for 33 inch tires
5.29 for 35 inch tires and up.

Your gear code will be on the fire wall just above the motor on 84-88 trucks and in the drivers door jam on 89-95 trucks.

No problem. I worked on cars most of my life. When I moved over to Toyotas I had never worked on a Toyota and it was a learning curve for me. I went thru several build threads and hundreds of threads on Yotatech and is how I got my knowledge on these trucks. Your two trucks have a lot of similarities and what you do on one mostly applies to the other even though they are different generations.
