Gargling nails

I got this rattle that comes n goes on my 88 4runner Seems to come around when the engines warmed up and has been driven around. It can get pretty loud.

Its loudest at low rpms. I have noticed the rattle while not in gear as well.

Not the timing chain..

Any ideas where I could look? Ill work on recording the noise if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

Red face

Have you looked for anything about to fall off??

Hard to tell about noises .

It could be the heat shield on the exhaust but those are most often long gone.

IS it a rattle or engine knock some rod knocks seem to get quiet as rpm increases:jessica:

I just bought the truck a week ago, so im in the stages of going through everythin and learnin at the same time.

Ill check the around the exhaust heat shield thanks for the rec!

It sounds like nails being gargled heh.. that's about the best I can describe the noise. Just not a pretty noise.

Ill let ya know in the mornin if that was it. Any other suggestions?

If that aint it ill post a recordin somehow.

Chances are that it's just an old truck that will make lots of noises.

If not....

I don't know.

Motor or t/c mounts. Fan hitting radiator?
Sometimes it helps with a better description like 1988 v6 auto
How do know it is not a loose timing chain?

Tranny? My truck had bad input shaft bearing and sounded like this. At least check to see if it's full of fluid since its a new to you vehicle.
