i also have 10 bolts off from around the bell housing but my starter never fell out... do i have to completly remove it?

so does the starter come out or is 10 bolts enough??? do i have to slide it out straight or tilted?? can i stick a screw driver in the hammer and pry is is that bad??? i can wiggle it out

I have not removed the specific unit you are working on, so I can only speak in general. Make sure you have all the bell housing bolts out, sometimes they can be hard to see. How does the starter bolt up, to the engine, like a gm product, or does it bolt to the bell housing. If it bolts to the engine, that shouldn't be the problem, unless it is hiding a bolt that connects the engine and bell housing from the engine side. Also, if there is a separator plate between the engine and bell housing, check any bolts that might be holding it to the bell housing from the engine side. There are usually two alignment pins between the engine and bell housing, and sometimes corrosion can make the bell housing stick to them, but they usually break free with the weight of the tranny is on them and you rock the unit back and forth. Before you go using pry bars and a BFH, make SURE you have all the bolts out or you are going to break something.

ill do cheif... i read that i needed 10 bolts out of the bellhousing and i have 10 out... the starter screws to the engine but 2 bolts go to the housing.. there out... thanks for the help

I just replaced my clutch last weekend on my 94 pickup 22R 4X4. The starter had to come all the way off. It was held on with a bolt that bolted into the bellhousing and a nut that screwed onto a stud that stayed in the bellhousing.
Also, to pull the tranny jack back (and then forward) I used a come-a-long. I was rolling around on my back on a crawler and found myself rolling more than the tranny!

Here is how I did mine by myself...a lot easier than I thought. Safety should be your TOP priority in removing and reinstallation

I know it is way too late to answer for the OP, but I just did this last night. The reason the FSM says to take the starter off and lay it aside is there is a 14mm bolt under it going into the bellhousing. If you get all the rear bolts out the tranny will come mostly loose, but seem hinged at the starter. You must take the last bolt out to separate. FIY to the others doing reaearch rather than posting a new thread.
By the way I love this forum for learning cheats around having to buy the super special tools LOL. SST's from the service manual. You could go buy a brand new Toyota cheaper than buying all the SST's.
