so i have a 1989 toyota pickup and my check engine light has been on for quite some time. is there anyone to fix it myself or turn it off... or what exactly is causing it to stay on? Thanks

 

well thats never a good thing to have a engine light on for along time. you need a code reader. i bought one the tells me the code number your throwing and also what it is on the screen. its one of my best investments and they cost about $70-100 at your local auto store. well worth the money imo.

Helps to know the engine, etc... but ...

On an '89 you should be able to read the codes by pushing a small piece of wire across certain ecu terminals, and counting the blinks on the check engine light.

Use the SEARCH button for engine codes, check engine light, etc. and look it up on here. Plenty of information!! Nobody can help you with details until you can do the basic troubleshooting and give us the code it is throwing and the other details.

 

nope not at all, you can even get a simple one that only gives you the code number and then a book with codes for as little as $50-60. but for around $100 you can get one that tells you both. goto napa or a local store and get a early christmas present.

No, you don't! That's absolutely ridiculous! They're called diagnostic check connectors! You jump(form an electrical connection between) T/TE1 and E1 and count the flashes of the check engine light.



I don't see the point of spending any money on one when you can check the codes without it for free. Free paper clip/jumper wire, free online FSM. If that thing doesn't read OBDII also, then it's a big fat waste of money. There's no excuse at all to buy a OBDI only code reader. Unless you can't count to 9.

thank you everyone and i believe its a 4cylinder 22re and it blinks a 4-1 which looking at it was "Throttle Position Sensor Signal"

 

take dash out and unplug the wire.

 

PS: Please don't even think about doing that people. It'd be one of the STUPIDEST things you could possibly do to your vehicle. GUARANTEED!!!

hey it passed inspection alright. thats all i was aiming for and this vehicle had nothing wrong with it at all and the thing was still on so i got fed up an unplugged it.

Do you even know what EFI is and/or how it works? Here's a clue...the ECU(Computer) plays a major role, in running the engine and maintaining it. Get it yet? No? I didn't think so.

 

ok no need to be a dick... i took your advice and figured out what it was which is the throttle sensor which was that 4-1 code!! i just dont have the money to replace it cause my brother just past away 6 days ago.... and i meant it worked meaning when i unplugged it, it still past smog!!

 

no prob. ppl dont realize that some ppl dont have the money to go get some things fixed. if i had the money to put my truck in the garage then i would have it done but im turning to yotatech for some answers. im leaning towards the alternator now. i got a spare i just need to go take it off the other truck. but if u need a quick fix to get through inspection, then its easier to unplug the thing and fix it later when u get the money.

 

I on the other hand could not get my c e l to come on while setting my timing and further investigation led to finding a missing light bulb. I temporarily pulled the one from the light to the left of the c e l on the dash. That's a light I haven't seen on yet, but was curious what that light is for. .
