91 Pickup 22RE - burning oil?
Hey everyone,
So I have a 91 Pickup with a 22RE which registered really low oil on the dipstick a few days ago. I bought the truck back in March with 192k miles, did an oil change and spark plug change pretty much right after I bought it and it has been running like a champ. I did have an exhaust leak due to a bad manifold gasket which I fixed in May, and again worked great. However, the past few weeks I noticed that when taking tight turns or a freeway off ramp at speed, my oil light would come on. I checked the dipstick and there was no oil on it. It took me 2 quarts to get it back between L and F on the stick.
Obviously, at this point I was freaking out, so I stopped driving it and did a compression test. 170 psi on all 4 cylinders. All plugs look brand new still. I looked under the hood but could not find any obvious leaks. Let it idle for 5 minutes over a big piece of cardboard and not a drop. Only thing I did notice was that my PCV valve had a lot of oil in it and the grommet is really worn/cracked. I have a new valve and grommet on order, but I'm not sure where to go from here. The truck does not smoke, but I do have a pretty significant amount of black buildup on the exhaust tip. Engine sounds good and runs well - no knocking, good power, no hesitation. I'm just confused now - I've driven the truck about 30 miles since adding the oil and the oil level is still where it was when I added the oil but I'm scared of not having addressed the issue.
Does this scream of anything obvious? Valves need adjustment? PCV? EGR? My more experience mechanic friend says that its normal for old cars to burn some oil, but I've only driven about 2k miles since the oil change I did and was over 2 quarts low which seems really excessive. I'm using 10w-30 Valvoline synthetic blend high mileage if that matters.
Thanks for any help you all can offer.
