87 22R Which cam???
Ok so i just bought an 87 toyota pickup 4x4. Its all stock right now with 82,000 original miles on the clock. I have been looking into buying a cam to give my self some more power for hills. So I have decided to go with an engine builder camshaft. but I don't know which one to buy... I talked to Ted and he recommended that I get the 261C. I plan on using this as a daily driver and a weekend wheeler. I have read a lot about the 268 he offers but I havent found anything about the 261. Does anyone have this cam? and if so how do you like it?? Im also planing on buying a doug thorley try y header when I do the cam swap. How does everyone like this header?

I ran it in my last motor. Nice power band between 1400RPM to about 3800RPM so I agree with Ted a good choice for your uses. I'm running a Delta Cam 260 now and its the same just got different engine mods on this engine so can't really make a fair comparison. You'll want to look at upgrading the exhaust and made a K&N filter (but some don't like them) I think you'll be please with your 22R or is it RE?

Its a 22R. Eventually I plan on switching to a weber carb, im still researching which one to get right now. I have no clue. But when I do switch carbs ill switch to a better air filter. But that will be further in the future so Im not so worried about that right now. When I get the cam I plan on getting a doug thorley try y header and running a magnaflow muffler. Probable 2" from the collector to the muffler then 2 1/4" out. And im ditching the cat since my county doesnt smog. Do you think that will be a good upgrade for the exhaust?

I dont wanna go efi just yet. I just got this truck in july and wanna keep it somewhat simple. I have a friend who did the swap it wasnt too hard. him and his drunk friend did it in a few days. lol but he had a bad failure i dont know how he did it but he cracked the head it 12 places. what set up do you have? I have the wrong 22R block to do the hybrid as well I looked into it. I wanna keep this close to stock just a little more pep out of it. I wanna keep close to the gas mileage i get as well. right now im gettin 21 around town and moutain roads and 24-26 on the highway it depends on how much i get on it to pass cars. lol

i say opt for the 268 cam...the power band starts out a LITTLE higher than the 261, but goes up into the higher RPM's up until around 6000rpm i think.
the 261 had some good torque down low, but nothing up top.
the 268 has about the same amount of torque as the 261, but goes higher into the rpm range.
now with mine, it would take some long hill "screams" (4000rpm or higher) and it would do fine...but if i got up to around 4800, it would fall flat on its face..and i had the 261C in my 22R.
i've heard the 268 doesn't start to fall off until like 6000RPMs..so you should be fine.
268Cam, Weber 32/36(properly tuned.....)along with a decent header, and a free flowing exhaust. and you should be golden.

The reason im opting for the 261 is I don't like to run my rpms that high. I usually dont like to push it much over 4000. I dont feel comfortable doin it.
with the weber how hard is it to tune? ive read a couple posts on it and it seems really complicated. is this true?

if you know what you're doing, then it's not hard to tune..but if you're a noob to the carb..then yes it can be hard to tune.
i don't see how people stay out of the High rpms.
i usually did with my '86 pickup...5000was the highest i EVER took it.
my 3VZ sees 5000RPMS every day though..it sounds alot better (not as clanky sounding) than my 22R did...my 22R sounded like it was gonna blow up past 4500rpms..lol
my 3vz sounds great though! sounds better above 3000rpm than it doesn under it lol

Thats how my 22R sounds lol ive never taken it above 4500. Honestly it scares me lol but i never keep it below 3000 it just feels gutless.
i understand carbs ive rebuilt one and seen several others done i understand how jets work. and ive rebuild single barrel carbs countless times for small engines. but ive never really messed with one to tune it for an engine ive just replaced the old with the new. lol

Ive found one but it goes with a complete truck for 1700. which is more than i paid for the truck i have right now. i paid 1350 for mine. Im in college now so money is really tight. i want to do the hybrid mod, that would probably be my far future upgrade. lol

Well, think about it..
To do a cam you're likely going to be rebuilding the top end right..?
Why not just go hit up a junkyard, find a 20R powered yota, and buy the head and do the work slowly, and as the money can be spended wisely..
You'll be better off in the longrun

i just rebuilt the head thats why i was just gunna buy a cam. some how i blew the head gasket so i had the head rebuild when that happened since it was already pulled apart. ive already invested too much in this head to switch out right now but in the future i will for sure switch out the block and build the hybrid.

Delta Cam Shaft in Tacoma as Mud mentioned, $55 if you give them your stock cam
I've had a Delta CAm 260 in my 22r for years now, it made an improvement over stock but no cam is going to make a 22r some new amazing beast.
Im running +12 deg advanced and the motor can still maintain 70 up nisqually hill with my 37s 5 days a week 260 days of the year. LOL

"Future plans (hopefully soon): SAS with 31's 4.56 gears 261 cam doug thorley try y weber carb "
SAS with 31's? .. lol kidding right? You from Hawaii?
how mine sat when i first rolled it out of the shop after solid axle swapping. Those are new 33 km2s
note truck does have a 2" Body Lift there but still, 31's man? whats the point of axle swapping it?
