Question 22re wont start

Ok so let me start with the basics.
1989 yoda 22re 5sp

What happend.....
I went out to start my truck. Started fine. Within a minute it choked out and died. Now it wont do anything but spin over.
I have read forum after forum and this is what I have done...
I have checked over every fuse, fuseable link, and relay with an ohm meter and everything is in spec
Tps
Efi main relay
Circuit relay
Mass air sensor
The sensor or the distributor
Yada yada

It is getting fire. Whitish blue spark. Also took out number 1 plug put it on tdc and checked rotor button. It is on number 1
I have jumped diagnosis box and got a code 51.

It wont start on ether or gas tried both in efi port. Took out plug after and had gas on plug. Also changed the fuel filter

Ughhhhhhh..... do any of you guys have any ideas? Where to now? Do I beat my head on the shop door 3 times and beg the yoda fairies to come fix it while im asleep? Lol

I really just dont know where to go from here. Maybe the computer? If so is there a way to test it?
Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

Have you looked up a copy of the FSM. I assume you probably have with all you have checked out. If for some chance you haven't it might be able to shed some light. We really don't get stumped just might take the right person to read it and they had a similar experience and solved it. Just hang in there and keep picking at it. Post your results. We tend to give priorities to post with lots of pictures. Good luck.

Did you check for vacuum leaks? If you ripped one of the boots (on the intake for example) it wouldn't start.

Other than visually checking the hoses is there a way to find a vacuum leak if it wont start

Oh and one more question? Does anybody have a link to a diagram for the 22re vacuum lines. Or some dummy pics lol. I have my chilton manual but the diagram is so hard to decipher. I would like to check them all over really good and make sure none have been put to the wrong place. Mine has 2 vsv on top a red and a blue. Thanks

I think the vacuum sticker might be on the underside of your hood.

Take the intake hose off (1 10mm bolt on each clamp) then turn it over and flex the joints while looking for cracks. These engines simply do NOT tolerate vacuum leaks.

Lol..... ummmm no. My ol truck was previously abused before I adopted her. There are no stickers under the hood. Ive had it for 6 years now. Most of all the work thats been done to it, this ol girl has done herself. Much more savy on things a lil older but im learning as I go.

ether as in starting fluid? even with a vacuum leak, it should have at least fired for a second with that.

what you are describing is fuel and spark present, but it won't catch at all.

just for drill, i'd rotate it top dead center, and make sure that the timing looks like it's still near the mark.

the factory fsm has a very comprehensive troubleshooting procedure for starting problems on these trucks, you'll probably have to use that.

Yeah. Starting fluid . wouldn't hit a lick. Today just for kicks I replaced the plugs, checked the air intakd hose. No cracks in it. Checked over all the grounds. Still nothing. It burped one time kinda surprised me, thats the first time its even attemped since this happened. Got a bud coming over after while to take a shot at it. The plugs i took ouy didnt look abnormal. I did download some trouble shooting pages from the factory fsm. Shows how to check over the ecu with an ohm meter to pinpoint any issues. I appreciate all the suggestions. Keep em coming and I will keep yall updated

Sure sounds like a timing problem, either valve or ignition. I'd take the valve cover off and verify it's in the right spot at TDC. Also while it's at TDC take the distributor cap off and make sure it's pointing in the right direction.

Okay il try that but when I took the number one plug out and bumped it to tdc you could hear the blow and feel the valve. Ol man had his finger stuck down in there to make sure it was up

Red face

At this point I think pulling the value cover and looking down at the timing chain might be in order.

You have cranked the engine with the distributor cap off I have had a few distributors break over the years .

If your getting Spark and getting fuel it can only be the timing.

When the plug fires it makes a sharp crisp sound.

The way you describe what happened it sounds like you ran out of gas.

Electrical failures are most often like you turned off the ignition .

Have you checked to hear the fuel pump run??

Unless you have pulled off a bunch of vacuum hoses in the aftermath a vacuum leak was not the problem.

Good luck.

I havent cranked the engine with the cap off .... just brought it tdc then pulled the cap.
The plugs make a nice sound. Just changed them. Was sure to turn over engine a few times before putting new ones in to clear all the ether and gas out.
I have a full tank of gas
Fuel pump is fine. Just replaced it about 6 months ago. but yes I checked it its running.
Was thinking a vacuum leak was probably not the problem but id go for anything at this point.

Hopefully today once I get out of bed..... worked 3rd so its almost bed time. Im going to try some of the things in the fsm I downloaded.....

Thanks everybody for suggestions and input..... I promise if I figure it out I will update you. And if you guys think of anything else ill still be checking in

Okay so update..... my ecu is good. Found a diagram and ran a whole boat load of tests.... took my dist. Cap off, spun it over its working and stopping on number 1 everytime I put it tdc. Check my coil and igniter and checked 101 other things and still no go. Ive reached my wits end. Come monday shes going on a roll back to the toyota man. See if he can track it down. ill update again when I find out something

What are the chances it's too rich? Does this year have the cold start injector? Early post said the plugs were wet with fuel.
