22re timing pulley mark 180 off

Hi all,

I just got done with a full rebuild and got the truck started but somethings not right. I'm pretty sure the cam timing is right (rockers loose when #1 piston is up) and that I have installed the distributor correctly. It cranks for about 4-5 seconds then catches after I push the throttle, runs rough for a minute then smooths out some, still not real good. I couldn't time it properly last night cause the mark was jumping around/not visible. Well, I shoot the light at it again tonight but this time I wonder where the mark went. I get down on my knees and point the light up at the pulley and the mark is directly on the bottom of the pulley I.E. 6:00! I don't know how I messed this up, any advice would be appreciated.

Are you sure when you put it together that you had the number 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke. You can't really be 180 deg out since the crank is keyed for the crank pulley. Something is in need of attention. Do not restart until you have verified that number 1 cylinder in on TDC on the compression stroke. Also the bright (different color) links on the timing chain should be visible and lined up at 12 o'clock on the cam sprocket and the dot on the sprocket should also be at 12 o'clock.

Good luck hope this helps

Thanks for the reply and for reminding me to update! It turns out that timing was at 0* my timing light was getting interference because I had the pickup too close to the distributor. I placed the pickup near the spark plug and the timing light functioned properly.

Still have a hard start and rough idle but that's a different problem I need to track down.

The hard start turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator. I installed a new one and it was bad out of the box. Within spec with the engine running but as soon as I shut it off the fuel would drain out through the regulator.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier, but this was EXACTLY what I was about to tell you after reading your first post - interference on the spark plug wire inductor.
