WHat Kind Of Pistons Does Your Engine Have? It Should Either Have A Flat-Top-Dish PIston With Two Valve Reliefs or A Pop Up-Dish Piston WiTh No Valve RelIefs. If You Have Not Been Into The Engine Yet You Can Tell Buy The Exhaust Port Shape. The Fuel Injected Head 85-95 Has A tear Drop Shaped Exhaust port. The Other Has A Round Port With Another Smaller Round Emission Port Over Top Of It. Key Is Knowing If You Have A Short Block.(Flat Top Dish Piston, Tear Drop Shaped Exhaust) Or A Tall Block (Pop Up Pistons, Round Exhaust Port With Extra Emission Hole)

There Were Several Trucks from July of 84 to mid 85 that had the tall block engine (carburated) but with the efi system on it. idk if they were using old stock parts on base models or what but ive seen atleast three in my lifetime. easiest way is taking the header off and checking the exhaust ports. next would be taking the cylinder head off. if you can measure the block there is 3/16th of an inche difference. the measurements can be found easily simply by google search

There are several differences between 84 and older and the 85 and newer. If it has bolt holes for a Fuel Filter and a place for the Knock Sensor it is 85 and newer. Engine Builder has the different rebuild kits.
Here is some of the differences and other ways I use to check which block.
Copied...
I got my Timing Chain on and had to replace the Timing Cover due to it being worn. I tried to use a early model 22r and they wont interchange. Thought I would put some info up to help others identify what they may have.
84 and older. 22r has no dimples/circles and the number "2" on it. Twistedyota got it right on the height thing, see the last picture for a good example. I also tried to mark which bolt holes for removing the timing cover on down the road when I have to do a chain again. Hope it wont burn off but it if does I tried to come up with an easier way. Never can remember which bolts they are.
22re has "6k" and dimples/circles. 85 and up.
Here is what I am talking about on the 1/8th inch height. I used a lockwasher to help show how much of a difference. This cover is 22r. Seems like the oil pump bolts were to short. Hope this will save some one some trouble. It is an early model 22r timing cover on a newer 22re block.

I would think that it is possible for the rings to not to be able to handle the higher compression. Seems to me there are somethings a little different on a turbo motor but I could be wrong.
