22re new piston question
hi I did some searching and couldn't find an answer to my question. I am in the process of rebuilding a 84 22re and I ordered a rebuild kit from enginebuilder and the pistons I received are different from the stock ones. my question is will they work?
the on left is old right is new

I had an 83 22r out of a Celica. It had the piston on the right. I don't know if the truck motors had a dome top or not. On the 85 and up block I have only seen the piston on the left. I too would be interested in seeing what you find out. I wondering if the dome tops were for the older blocks or just the Celica motor. Do you know what this motor came from? Is it the original motor to your truck? You may need to call Ted at EngBldr and am sure he could give you the correct information.

Remember 84 was the year of the switch over .
The flat pistons are the newer style engine
No they will not work.
Then who is to say it might have had the wrong pistons put in from being apart before.
Does the head have the pear shaped exhaust ports ??
I hope you had any needed machine work done before you ordered the parts

Well if you have the pear shaped exhaust ports .
That is the older style head so you seem to have a mess.
Was this a running engine when you started or did it come in pieces ??
I have to wonder why the flat top pistons where used with that head ??

That head and flat top pistons go together.
The engine may be newer than the truck.

ok well how else can I figure this out will posting numbers on the block help? otherwise how else do I identify if someone just put a newer style head? as far as anyone can remember this truck is all original, Original owner is a good friend of mines father in law. The pickup was running until it was run out of oil and spun a rod bearing.

I can also say that the engine has been apart previously their are numbers stamped on pistons, rod caps, crank saddles etc number 1,2,3,4,etc you can tell from positioning they are not factory also deck face of block has numbers stamped i think to tell piston numbers

Here's the tell-all for the block:
You're looking for that "laser block" boss on the driver side of the block. If you have it then it is an 85+ block. If it is drilled and tapped then you have a 85+ TURBO block.
85+ Block = Laser boss, Pear shaped exhaust ports, flat top pistons
Pre 85 Block = no laser boss, round exhaust ports, domed pistons
There are other differences, but those are the main ones to look for. Pistons, blocks, heads, timing covers, water pumps and oil pumps are not interchangeable between the early and late motors.
It is also safe to assume that your motor is not the original motor that came in the truck and it is clearly evident that somebody has tinkered with it. My recommendation would be to take the engine down as far as possible and build it back up. I would not trust the expertise (mainly the lack of expertise) of a previous owner.
