Hello everyone, so I'm new to SUVs in general owned mainly sports vehicles for track purposes. Now I am getting into off roading and enjoying nature! This weekend I purchased my first off road worthy vehicle a bone stock all original 2000 4Runner 4 cylinder 5 speed 4wd with 175k on the odometer. Issue I found is going into gears sometimes is a bit difficult but then other times it goes into gear well while in motion. In addition when I accelerate at full throttle it slips in the 1.5k rpms then grips and is fine. I am assuming it might be a clutch problem along with that issue I notice also when switching to 4low it grinds but in 4h 2l there is no grinds. Falls back to maybe a clutch issue or readjusting the clutch pedal and maybe changing the shifter bushings. I will be changing fluids this weekend and start my diagnostics. Anything to look for in these models I should look into? I've done some research prior but didn't find much. Purchased this vehicle because it was to clean to pass hardly any rust and the previous owner loved this truck so much that even the undercarriage wash regularly and cleaned with armor all.

If your clutch is slipping time to get your hands dirty !!

Unless the last owner was trying to adjust the Clutch and moved the Rod attached to the Clutch Master Cylinder You really don`t need to touch it.

About the only time adjustment is needed is when installing a new Clutch Master Cylinder.

If your the only one driving this you may be able to go quite some time till it is to the point it will no longer go in gear .

Depending on your style of off road you might really think about dual cases .

Just be careful learning to drive this it is not going to handle anything like the sports cars your used to.

It is so easy to forget

Hey thanks, I was thinking the same thing about the possibility of adjusting the clutch rod. I noticed the clutch doesn't release til the very end of letting go of the clutch pedal. Yes it will be a very different feel! Right now I am focusing on buying new tires thinking maybe some toyo all terrains or maybe even some mud terrains since it really isn't my daily. I'd like to add a lift to it but right now I am in a budget and I rather do it right the first time, especially because this 4runner is very clean. So tires and sliders to protect the lower panels, these are on my list to do. Maintenance was done by previous owner at Toyota dealer last month motor oil, diff fluids just need to tackle the tranny and tcase I believe.
