Test fitted tires for my truck today
Hi all,
I just went tire shopping today. I plan on putting 285s on my truck with 3" revtek lift I did recently. The guys at America's Tire (Discount Tire) test fitted the following:
On flat grounds and turning the wheels all the way only cause minor contact on the mudflap and the cone. The tires did not rub the control arm nor made contact with the sway bar. It looks like I won't need to trim as much. The Rockers are close to the Stock offset (+30mm).
Now, I do not want the Rockers nor the Dominator (good looking tire BTW). These are the setups I am looking at:
Setup A
I like setup A because, it gives me more choices in tires and the tires are chepaer. It's not stock. i don't want this setup because I am afraid that I may rub more because the offset much different than stock (+30 mm offset). I do not want to trim the bumper. I would not mind trimming the inner fender and losing the mudflaps.
OR
Setup B
I like Setup B, because it costs less than Setup A. However, these tires are more expensive $190 vs $165 for the 16s. I don't think I will have to trim as much.
I know there are few members out there that run 285s with stock rims. Are you having any rubbing issues with this setup?
The guys at Discount tires had told me that it would be less rubbing and trimming than the Enkeis. I know GoodTimes had a lot of issues with rubbing when he first installed the lift and MTRs on his AR 23 rims (0mm offset). This seems to confirm with what the Discount tires guys are saying.
Price is not the deciding factor for Setup A or Setup B. Ultimately, I want something that gives me the least trouble with rubbing and trimming. I'd stick with the stock rims if it is a better offset.
Your opinions, advice, and experience are welcome!!!

If you like the stock rims then stick with them. That would give you the least amount of hassle. Try and have them test fit the Goodyears on your stock rims to see how much they rub, if at all.

No tire wheel expert here, but you will have a tough time fitting those 16" tires on the stock 17" wheels for setup B
The Goodyears look good if you want tires that looks really agressive. I would assume with the wider tires you will need more offset than stock, but I can be completely wrong.
Probably go the 16" wheel route, as it will give you more meat on the tire. I can't remember anybody that went 285's without getting new wheels as well.
ANyhow, it will look when you are done.

If ya didn't notice I really like the Revo's which come highly recommended and the MT/R's which I love. Do keep in mind that not all tires work in the type of offroading you do. If you plan to go the A/T route, I'd say Revo's are your best bet
For M/T tires, there are other recommended tires but since I've only used MT/R's I really can't commend on other tire choices. I can honestly say that these tires rock in the condition I play in though!
One last thing to note, during normal driving, rubbing will be very minial. I never rubbed once at full lock on the inner frame or any part. The only part that I always had problems was the bumper (which was when the front compressed) - me speeding on a turn! lol... Hope that clears alot up.
You will encounter rubbing when you deflate your tires and flex/stuff like there's no tomorrow. Since during normal driving these conditions are not present there really is no need to worry. Once you hit the trails, expect to hear some odd sounds... Mine sounds like a finger running down a comb but louder and amplified by the cabin.

It appears the 275/70R17 is very close in size to the 285. The price is almost the same between the two.
Anyways, discount tires don't have them in stock. They will have to order for me. Guy said he is willing to work with me to get the tires fitted. Keep all posted.

Timber this is a great thread - I am at the same point having gone into Discount tire a few tiems to look at my options.
Your saving me a ton of work. I am debatiing myself whether to stay 16" stock and get the revos or go new 17"/Tire combo.
If you get a different wheel I would be VERY insterested in buying your Limited wheels off ya - (I'd come and pick them up, of course) Just an idea.
Until then I think the Revo's are my choice for look/performance, just a wheel issue at this point.

Discount wants to charge me $31/tire for the no-question asked warranty. Although they still have the FREE prorated warranty. Is it worth it to pay the extra $$$?

I really don't remember but I know I made sure that the free replacement was included (warranty). Ofcourse you'll have to pay for tax or something like that though. Shouldn't be much, I think something like 15 bucks to replace it... Can't beat that.
What's the diff between the road hazard and the no question asked warranty? I'd say make sure you're getting the free replacement warranty. I'll check the receipt tonight to double check everything and let ya know.

The one that is included for free is pro-rated after a certain tread depth.
I am still trying to find there literature on either warranty.
