New Guy in MD with question..

Hey everyone, I just joined and woud like to say hey.

I am a CPA by day and a garage junkie by night. This weekend I just installed my first ever lift kit. (04 SR5 - OME heavy duty, approx 3"".

While under there I noticed that my driver side inner CV boot was spitting a lot of grease. I was thinking about trying to do it myself, but I am a little hesitant due to having to remove the axel(?). Any thoughts? If I were to take it in any ideas on a price?

Thanks and I will post some pics tonight when I get home.

Differential drop? Most boots will leak after a lift install and stop. Clean, monitor, and replace if it continues.

is the boot torn? you should be able to call any service place for a price over the phone, just to get a ball park of install expense that you'd be saving.

if you do it yourself, you may wish to replace the entire 'half-shaft'. outer and inner cv's on that side. then you shouldn't have to touch that side again. prices for half shafts are out there online as well.

Thanks guys for the quick response.

The boot was leaking before I did the lift, so I am guessing that it needs to be replaced.

I did get a qoute from a local shop and it was pretty reasonable, $240 to replace both boots on the driver side. I saw the kits on-line for around 90 bucks so that $150 in labor.

Thanks again,

Usually they leak when they worn out or damage or when you have too big of a CV angle and this wears them fast. There is also an option of clamp failure. I had this failure this winter. Changing a boot without taking the axle off the diff is possible, but very time consuming. Its not that difficult, just pop it out, change and pkug it back, make sure that the snap ring is in place when you'll be installing it back. Use high molibden synthetic CV grease.

Thanks all, I did a little checking last night and found that the boot does have a small rip in it.

I did install a 1" diff drop along with the new shocks and springs.

I am think I am going to let the shop do it because I also need them to do an alignmnet on it as well.

price the axle shaft replacement too. more new parts, and less in labor.

Hey Pete,
Fellow Marylander here. Unfortunately I'm in DC going to school right now and have no garage space or money. Great to hear you got a lift installed, have been looking at a build for about 5 years now but no luck until graduation and get a full time job. Where have you been off-roading around here? I usually make treks down to VA and up to PA but not too often (and some when I make trips out to the Eastern Shore and up to ME).

If you are going in for an alignment might as well have them check it out for you (may be covered under warranty, but your lift may have voided it). This is probably way to late by oh well.
