Looking into buying a 2006 4x4 Sports Edition V6....

Anyone try one yet? If you have...how did you like it?

I'd be coming from a 97 SR5 4x2.

I'm liking what i'm seeing in the SE 2006 version...but I do have some things I don't like already...

little things though...

Chrome handles on the Sports Edition?? I find them tacky! Is there an option to get color-keyed door handles and maybe even the front grill??

also..the whole JBL stuff. No matter what...I plan to put in my own audio system. I'm a huge audiophile..and I'm almost positive that the JBL system is just being sold on the JBL name. Is it possible to get my runner with little to no speakers at all?? or do i HAVE to get a JBL sysmte with it?

last question:

all time 4 wheel drive...does it waste more gas then a 4x2 would?

Go to www.kbb.com and you can find out all the option packages and single options available. (You can't "order" a import vehicle the way you used to be able to do American cars, you are stuck with the packages available.)

Yep. But if you aren't gonna get 4wd, why in the world would you buy a 4Runner - why not buy a car (they do make station wagons) and get 30mpg and better accelleration and better handling instead? Even a Dodge Magnum with the smaller semihemi gets better mileage than a 4Runner...

Only the V8 4th gen 4X4 4Runners are fulltime 4WD.

With the V6 4x4, you have the option of just using 2wd. You can also shift into Fulltime 4WD, which is the same as the V8 4x4 models.

With both V8, and V6 4x4 models you can also lock the center differential for a fixed 50/50 split, which you would only use in slippery conditions.

So basically, the V6's 4WD system is more versatile.

I know that the sports can be had without the JBL system, my 04 didnt have it, not positive about the 06. Definitely find one with the base system to do your own custom stereo. The JBL is all proprietary crap.

As for the door handles and grill, try to get the dealer to put what you want on it. If they wont you could probably swap those for color keyed ones after for a reasonable price, or even find someone on www.t4r.org that wants to add some crappy bling to theirs.

exactly. just do a trade with someone or ebay them.

I have a '05 sports V8 and love the power under there. What can I say, when I found out it was the same engine as the bigger 'yota and LC100, my mind was made up even before the test drive. doesn't help with the economy though.

I do prefer the v6 given that its not all time 4wd and that I can switch back and fourth from 4x2 to 4x4 at on the fly. Not to mention I'd get better gas milage on a v6. But man does that v8 look tempting.

Well also turns out that the door handles are only chrome on the SR5 models. The door handles on the sports edition are actually color keyed. Wonder if i can get the grill color keyed. And I wonder if I can get black pearl emblems too.... HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.............

Search a bit on here and find the thread where they took the V8 and V6 to the dragstrip. It will surprise you. They are neck and neck speed-wise, with a slight nod to the V6! The V8 would be a better choice for towing. I'd rather have the v6 (and of course, the manual trans.)
