Intermittent starting issues on 09 Tacoma
Posting this one for my Father-in-Law
His 09 Tacoma with the 4.0 has an intermittent starting issue that not even the dealer can solve. Looking to see if someone else has experienced and solved this. (I have an 86 with a carb so I'm not normally troubleshooting something like this.)
At intermittent times the truck will simply not start. It will turn over fine, but will not run.
This happens about twice a month, but has totally skipped a month and has happened 3 times in a day. He builds homes for a living so he is in and out if the truck fairly regularly. The truck has 154K miles and this started at about 100K.
Sometimes when this happens, he will go out to the truck, it will start and run for about 3-4 seconds and then dies. After that, it won't hit a lick. He can turn the key off and let it sit for 20 minutes or so and then it will start and run just fine. If he leaves the key in the ON position, the 20 minute countdown will not begin to restart. He must turn the key all the way off. Also, it has not thrown a check engine light.
He has written down all the different times this has happened and there is no rhyme or reason. It doesn't matter how long of a trip before it starts, what the outside temp is, how long the truck has set, or even how he holds his mouth.
Thoughts, ideas, questions?
Thanks,
Jay
