Question Coils vs. Spacers for X-reas

I was just wondering can I just install taller coils rather than buy spacers for my runner with X-reas. Has anyone tried to do this? I'm pretty close to making my decision for a spacer kit. Everyone seems to be doing this on the older runners. ie Cruiser coils and Tundra. Why can't I? What kind of problems could I expect?

well, spacers are relatively inexpensive and just give you added height... if you're gonna go with new coils, you'll have the whole thing apart anyhow and the extra cost of new shocks is nominal; you'd get a better overall ride, i'd think.

technically, i'm not sure if the xreas shocks are long(er) enough to provide the travel necessary to accommodate the taller coils.

Dave,

It's never been done on a 4th gen so I can't really say for sure. I would suspect that the added lift from the coils can cause damage on the xreas but if you really think hard about it, it's really no different from adding spacers on top.

Anyway I can't promise or guarantee you anything but I would say give it a try if you are in the testing mood and give us some feedback accordingly.

Good luck

Toytec

Thanks guys,

I'm thinking about this package from Toytec.

Part Number
3RUN-FRC 3” Lift 4Runner Kit '03-'06

Included in kit:
(2) front lift coil springs
(2) Toytec top plate spacers for full 3" front lift with coil springs
(6) top plate studs
(2) 2" lift rear HD "Firm" coil springs
(OME 895)

Price: $ 359.99

In my mind it seems that taller springs will be safer and give a better ride than spacers. I just want a taller stance. I go offroad maybe twice a year and navigate wash outs. Should I just chuck the X-reas and go the entire OME route? I really want to keep the ride the same as it is though, for the least amount of money.

hey, that's a nice and interesting find. i suppose that if toytec markets the kit as above that they have tested it to be compatible with the stock shocks?

i am in a similar position as yourself: considering chucking the whole XREAS system and going OME all the way. i loathe the stock, nose-low (and tail-low, for that matter) stance and the ride is a little cushy for my taste too.

nice find. let us know what else you discover in the process.

I got an email from Doug at Toytec. He said the kit with the best ride is the RUN3-FRCC. It will only be slightly stiffer than stock.

He reccmmends:

Part Number
3RUN-RCC 3" 4Runner Lift Kit '03-'06

Included in kit:
3" Front Lift Spacers-- CNC Machined From T-6 6061 Aluminum
6 longer top plate spacer studs
2" Lift Rear ToyTec "stock ride" custom coil springs for a soft ride

I'm thinking about going with next model up with the OME 895's. That way if I get tired with the suspension its one less part i have to order.

Being from Canada, I really don't know much about Toytec. He said that the've sold lots of kits for the FJ, but not so much for the 4runner.But he has sold kits to runners with X-reas. He didn't give any specifics. It was pretty hard to understand his email. Not much info.

Do you guys think I should replace the front coils as well?

Remember that spacer lift has preloading spacer under the "Top Plate" and upper spacer which go on top of the "Top Plate" on front struts. This means that you lowering the whole strut with upper spacer and extending the shock by preloading spacer. By changing the coil on front struts you'll do the same as preloading spacer, BUT you can't extend it more then 3/4"-1" (more and you'll have problem with shock downtravel + CV angles). On the rear you can swap the coils. I don't see any problems with that, but your new coil should have suitable rate not to harm the shocks. Rear shock leak is common when you doing wrong setup, so no warranty.
I never used ToyTec lifts, so can't say anything about them. I hope their engineers worked on this and designed the lift which will eliminate future problems.

So I bought this lift.

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f180/fs-new-3-toytec-ome-lift-kit-03-06-4runner-105037/

I'm going to try to keep the X-reas. Is there anything I should know about when installing it. It looks like I'm to do something nobody has done on this board, which seems pretty wieird to me.

Sorry to bring up a dead thread.

I was wondering if you were still running the larger coils with the stock XREAS system.

If so how is the ride and are there any issue?

Thanks

They are still sitting in my garage. I can't find a shop willing to install them.

A friend of mine has a 2003 4Runner. He did the 2.5 inch spacers, and 33's. It looks great. There are some rubbing issues when you turn the wheel too sharp... The advantage to the spacers is that you retain relatively stock ride, and suspension response, the advantage to the new springs would be better ride(depends on the spring, and what your using the vehicle for) more flex, etc. Good Luck with the install.
