Clunk in rear suspension?
Hi All,
Somewhat frequently I get a clunk from the rear of my 04 4R. It happens after I come to a somewhat fast stop and when I release the brakes to go again. It feels like someone just bumped me from behind. Has anyone else had this problem?

You're expeciting axle wrap/wind-up. It happens when the rear driveshaft skip joint binds up. If you stop abruptly, the rear axle will rotate down a little and the driveshaft slip joint will open up slightly and then stick in place. When you release the brake and accelerate, the shift in vehicle position will cause the slip joint to "jump" back in place giving you the "thud" feel/sound.
If you lube the slip joints 99% of the time, the problem will get resolved. Some other alternatives is to take it into Toyota but all they'll do is lube and call it a day.
Btw this has been covered as it's a very common issue for many of us. Search for some of the key words and you'll definitely find a lot of details on this issue.
Good luck

I was experiencing the same problem in my 98 when I first bought it 2 months ago. I was told from some Yotatech faithfuls that I needed to lube the driveline and U-joints and the problem was fixed thereafter. I too was expecting the worst, but thank God it was as easy as shooting some grease in the Runner. I believe if you do a search on this site you can find a pretty detailed write up on where to lube and what lube to buy. Good luck.

it is in the maintenance subform in the tech section. and as far as what grease to use, look in the back of your manual in the "specifications" section.
noobs, take some time and look around in the tech section. there are some really good writeups in there. note that searching *may not* always pull up a writeup, depending on the key words you use. thus, look in the tech section
