My leer leaks like a siv from the front. I hear the snugtops fit better. It has to do with the shape of the bed in front. I think I know how to fix mine, but I would suggest ARE with windoor sliders.

I will check ARE out.
I was thinking about no side windows but am not sure I would laike that
only worry with side windows is that poeple can seewhat you may have in the back of the truck
lots of choices

Leer or Unicover attachment??
Slosurfer,
How does your Leer attach to the truck bed? Does the attachment require any cutting/modification of the factory bedliner?
Anyone else out there have a Unicover installed of a late model Tacoma with the factory bedliner? How do they do it??

Snug Top: http://www.snugtop.com/index.php
Otherwise, I would recommend a A.R.E

No cutting, it attaches with clamps that fit in the factory sliding rails. From what I have heard, for looks and fit, go with the snugtop. I was supposed to get a snugtop supersport, but stupid Toy of San Luis Obispo, ordered me a crappy Leer. It even says on the contract "Snugtop", they tried to tell me it is the same thing. This was after it took almost two months for it to come in. I went to go have it installed and I saw right away that the place sold Leer not snugtop, so I had her show me what I was getting. Come to find out they had ordered the wrong size, but she had one that they had for awhile that was the right size plus it came with a yakima rack system and she would give me $200 bucks if I took it off her hands so they could make more room. First I priced them out and the crappy leer w/ the rack system came out to about the same as the snugtop supersport w/out a rack system. So, I called the dealership and ranted at them for awhile and didn't get anywhere, finally I got them to give me a couple of free oil changes if I took the Leer (I didn't tell them she was giving me cash to take it). All in all, I came out on top, but I am still pissed that they would try to pull something like that. I actually like the Leer, I just need to do something to the front to keep the water out. Eventually, I am going to switch to sliding windoors, which isn't an option with the snugtop. I also will make good use of the rack system, which was something that I was going to have to buy for the snugtop. So I took my 200 bucks and spent it on my 4runner. Sorry for the rant, but if you go through the dealer, make sure you know what they are ordering. I still can't believe that it was in my contract, plus it is pictured in the brochures. When I questioned them, they said, "I thougth we has x amount of dollars set aside for a camper." I told them "Hell no, I asked how much is it going to be for this truck with this snugtop supersport (me pointing at picture in brochure), and you came back and said this price, and this is what your monthly payments will be! I told them that was rediculous!" Needless to say, once my free services are done, I am done with this dealership! Sorry about the rant! Can you tell I am still pissed about it!

I have an 06' Taco dble cab, Old Man Emu 3'' lift and an A.R.E topper, awesome, and they come with a lifetime warranty. I paid about 1400 for mine w/ window tint, sliding windows, fold down and sliding front window, and a installed yak rack

I have a snugtop on order and it has the sliding side windows. I got the xv instead of the sport - there are 3 models of snugtop for the DC. Everything I have heard is that the snugtop is worth a few extra bucks.
I will let you know when i get it installed next week.

Somewhat bringing this thread back from the dead.
I am looking at getting a shell for my Taco. It will help me make the most of it as I don't use the bed for hauling tall things very often, and if I need to I will just use a trailer...I almost prefer that anyway.
I have it narrowed down to Snugtop...I figure there's got to be a reason that Toyota chose them as the manufacturer of the shells you can get put on from the factory.
I really like the look of the Snugtop XTR. It's got a contoured back door and it has the roof rails pre-installed which allows me to add a Yakima rack to it for lights and what not.
It was between this one and the Snugtop Super Sport. The Super Sport will run me $1895 at my local dealer, that's installed painted to match, no options added. The XTR will run me $1995 at my local dealer installed with no options added.
What do you guys think?
I think I will be happy with either of them...but I am just trying to decide which one looks the best. I will definitely want to add an aftermarket roof rack/basket to the shell so I can put lights and tools and stuff up there for camping trips, etc...
Thanks!

I looked at Snugtop and ARE for my canopy on my '05 but had a hard time paying almost 2K for one. I ended up getting a Leer because they were able to get one in a couple of days (needed it for a quick cross country trip. A previous post mentioned the Leer leaking, I take mine off several times a year and don't have that problem.
Now if I could have waited a few weeks I would have bought a Raider Cap that made in Canada ( http://www.raider.ca/ ) I felt the quality was good, options were very competitively priced and overall price is much cheaper than the Snugtop or ARe..

I bought a Vista shell for 1100 bucks installed and painted to match. It has an interior light, carpet lining, and a sliding front window. My understanding is that camper shells are built the same. Mine does not leak. I do not think that paying 2grand means you get better quality. In fact I wanted sliding side windows which you cannot get in most of the higher end shells. Just because the dealership goes with a certain shell doesn't mean jack. The Snugtop is no more or less custom built for a Tacoma than any other shell.

Price may not always equal better quality but I do think it plays at least somewhat of a role in what you're getting.
When it comes to something like a camper shell I'm more than willing to spend more for a name brand like Snugtop or LEER. Price isn't really a huge concern, quality, looks and overall fit/finish is more of a priority.

Last week, I ordered a Snugtop XTR. I was assured that it would fit my 04 DC. It was BIG bucks, but it seems to be the best that I saw. With all the goodies, about $1,900 out the door. Ouch!

You can hang home-brew curtains if you want. Velcro them, even.
