another lift question....

Well I have been reading researching lifts and tire combos for a long while know and finally found the tire and size I would like to run on my 2013 tacoma dc sb 285/75r16.

Here is what I don't understand. Everyone says to get a 3 inch lift to fit a 285 but doesn't the standard coilover lift not change the your actual suspension travel and just the ride height? So even if you lift you will still stop at the bumps just like stock suspension. Full stuff would rub just as bad as stock?

I am trying to fit 285s without a lift and am fully prepared to cut fender, body mount, and pinch weld as well as some front fender liner. So my second Question is if anyone has tried this and how it went. Also would love to see a picture of a stock truck and 285s.
Thanks for any input.
