hey rocket terp im not sure what theyre called, but why not get the 4 door wrangler? or that may be what you already have. wait a minute, why am i talkin a jeep guy that wants a yota into gettin another jeep. haha. my stepmom actually has a jeep. its a grand cherokee. its a pretty reliable vehicle. its a v6, had it about 5 yrs and done nothin but routine mant. shes only put about 30k mi on it tho, but still its a good vehicle.what about a 3rd gen runner? theres quite a few aftermarket products for them. a crap ton more than the 4th gen runner. plus some of them had the factory e-locker option... and ,there hard to find, but they also made a 5spd 3rd gen with teh factory e-locker
and william, very thoughtout comparison. great post

My 3rd gen followed some curretn Rubicons right up a trail when all the Jeep guys said I would struggle but having a bit taller coils and a bit taller tires and rear locked my '99 kept right up.
On the street is where the Runner suits me more than a Jeep Wrangler since it can still look good on a night on the town and tote 4 adults around comfortably and if it's cargo i need to haul it loads up much more than a jeep will ever hold. Jeeps to me just aren't that comfortable on long drives and their boxy shape in the wind makes my 4runner feel like a Porsche cutting through the wind at 80.

why not an fj? 4runners are nice, my mom has one. that is exactly why i dont. you said it, it is easy to see it as a mom-mobile.
i wanted a tj really bad a couple years ago. found one, drove it, and was amazed that so much money could be asked of a pile of hardware. now, someday, when im rich, i could afford that one right tool for going places no vehicle should go. in the meantime, ill stick with my toyota that hauls all my tools no matter how muddy or screwed up the job-site. then can haul my family to anywhere i want. and if there are a couple jeep tracks on the trail in front of me, i have the comfort of knowing he/she paid for one ugly-a@@ interior
