My best advice is put the valvetrain noise outta your mind and enjoy your new truck for what it is. Break it in. Maintain it. Make a BBQ. Invite some friends over. Focus on cool mods.
My "lemon" 3VZ's driver's side valvetrain has been clacketly for years -- never better, never worse. As far as I'm concerned, par for the course.

I get about 15.5 in combined driving (using only premium fuel) with my V8 (contrary to the wildly optimistic 17.1 indicated by the trip computer). I'm hoping it improves with miles (I've got 1800 on it now). My 02 GMC with a 5.3L and 3.73 rear gets 16.5 under the same conditions (and 21 on trips) using regular fuel, but it's well broken in with 19K on it.

Maybe the V8 can do better on the highway with the higher torque and 5 speed, but I still feel that in most cases, bigger displacement means more fuel.
By the way, sorry to get off the clacking engine issue, which is what this forum is about, but I thouht this was interesting, have not forgot about you Mish!

I'm new here, but sorry to hear about the valve noise. My opion is that we spend a lot of money on these trucks and they should be right. I could see if they all had valve train noise, but how can Toyota say it is normal if one V6 is making a racket and the other isn't. Doesn't make sense.
My MPG on my V8 sport is around 16 around town with a best of about 17.5 with more highway driving.

I have gone to sacrastic mode now, so when I hear my truck rattle like an old Arizona rattlesnake with arthritis, I simply smile and tell people that I got noisy loaner from Toyota
Just this morning some redneck on huge red Chevy truck at the gas station was admiring my "diesel" and telling that I should have gone with Chevy like he did since the age of 3.

I otherwise think Sil is an a-ok guy but I think that post should be deleted because it is a personal attack on someone.
I don't care if someone says something about a country or politics but I'm not for totally left field bashing. I think everyone is welcome here no matter the politics.

Oh ok Sil I understand where you're coming from. I kind of read it differently and thought it was all lighter than you took it. I totally enjoy your posts so I don't want to come across all harsh on you. I just read your comments a little "low blow" compared to the other stuff but I guess on the internet it's hard to know what someone is really saying.

The 5 speed is geared for pulling and towing. It's 1st is really geared short to get a great start. 5th isn't geared as "extra" for cruising, so at freeway speeds both trucks are at very similar rpms.
THink of it this way, The "extra gear" is 1st, not 5th.
Gear Ratios
1st 3.52:1-------------------- 2.80:1
2nd 2.05:1------------------- 1.53:1
3rd 1.40:1-------------------- 1.00:1
4th 1.00:1-------------------- 0.71:1
5th 0.72:1-------------------- NA
Final drive 3.73:1----------- 3.91:1
Fuel Economy [City/Hwy in mpg] 15 / 19---------- 17 /21

Remember, you own a truck, and driving it for economy and quietness is ridiculous. If you want economy and a quiet ride, than buy a camry.
My V10 in my F350 has a 6 speed manual, 310 Hp and 425 Torque, and it gets 21mpg highway (its a 6100lb truck).
Gearing is what dictates fuel economy, not motor size.

If I was pulling a trailer for example, I believe the V8 would win the fuel mileage battle because it would not have to downshift as often as the V6 due to torque. There are actually many non-linear effects that can change these numbers. Speed alone is a big one. The V8 say at 85 MPH might be more efficient than the V6 due to drag. But at 65MPH the V6 would be better. Under normal conditions it is still my belief that the V6 should usually do better. Bottom line...who does really care, I didn't buy an SUV for gas mileage, but I did buy the V6 becuase it had plenty of power and will get better gas mileage in most cases. As far as being a quiet ride, I hope you are not refering to the vavle train noise as that is totaly unacceptable and Toyota should be ashamed of themselves for that screw up and ongoing deception.
I also think that you should offer to be in a commercial for Ford, they would love to hear of your fuel efficiency with that V10!
I actually just fell off of my chair when I read that.
Happy motoring to everyone!

Well, my attorney got initial reply from Toyota refusing to purchase my truck back due to the faulty engine...... They "carefully" reviewed repair history (which was conveniently worded by the local puppets-dealerships) and decided that noise is normal. In a few days I will have an arbitration date, which is all I need to proceed with the full blown action.

I am going to take a short movie with my digicam in a few minutes and let you guys decided if you think this motor rattles, or not.....

I used my half dissent camera to film it and the motor is not warm enough to make the most of the rattle, however you can clearly hear the difference between left and right banks.

Hey Mish, thanks for the clip, it is tough to hear it there, I think it would be better to record it under load, hood up, in a vacant parking lot. Just let the camera sit in engine compartment somewhere. If I accelerate up to 15 mph it will make a huge racket on my truck as I'm sure it does on yours as well. This I think would be very easily heard on a camcorder.
Perhaps even if you did it over just with the hood up might improve the effect. All I can hear right now is the injectors, sorry,
but that's my take on it.

I agree, on this one all you can hear is the difference between the sides, but it is hard to realize how annoying this rattle is up close. Human eye and ear is far superior to $500 digital camera
