05 4 runner shakes when accelerating from 1st to 2nd

My 2005 4 runner 2WD has about 96k on it. Recently when I have been accelerating from 1st to 2nd gear the car shakes a little as if I'm going over small bumps very quickly then after about 1000- 1200 rpm it stops. It's very quick but it is also noticeable. I've tried to replicate this from a dead stop but it seems to happen randomly although I've noticed it happens most when there is a slight incline. I'm due for the 90k service so perhaps its spark plugs? I hope this is not a transmission issue but I know there are far more knowledgeable people on here than me that could possibly help me diagnose this. Thanks for your help!

My 99 Tacoma has a similar issue but mine was more consistant. I took it to the Dealer about 3x and they messed with the tie-rods, alignment, tire balancing but it never stopped. I finally replaced all 4 tires and shocks and it was gone.

Mutt382,
Did you ever find a solution? I have a 4Runner with nearly the exact same issue.

Thanks.

Hey guys my truck is also doing the samething did you ever figure out the cause? I changed my plugs no dice.

when I called the dealership the guy said that my crankshaft pulley key could have failed causing the slip have you heard of this?

My truck is a 2006 4runner, and about the snag if I power through an acceleration (keeping it above 2000 rpm) its fine but if I nurse it it sputters and shakes. Any help would be great thanks

In my case it ended up being the torque converter. We replaced it and the problem went away.

torque converter, dang. if you get a sec can you let me know what your truck was doing to lead you to changing the converter. Mine will only do it at around 1400 1500 rpms with a incline load to it. Not an expert on torque converters but was wondering if it would only cause a selective shutter at that point or were you having difficulties at other ranges as well. thanks

Actually, I was just looking for answers on my friend's 4Runner that he had at the time. He was the one that ended up finding the solution, so I'm not sure how he figured it out. I recall he had previously tried re-balancing the drive shaft with no luck. The issue was pretty much identical to the OP's issue where it would shake at low RPM when accelerating (under load). New torque converter and the issue disappeared.

JJM,

I'm new to this board, but am having pretty much the same problem with my 06 4Runner. Did you ever identify the problem with your rig?

Any insight would be appreciated. I'll look into the new torque converter.
