04 t4r stuck in 4lo
I have a 2004 Toyota 4runner v6 4wd with 130k miles. Last month I started getting a rough start lasting about 15 seconds. A couple of days later the engine light, VSC, and VSC TRAC OFF lights came on. I took it to a parts store and read the code as misfire #6. Changed all plugs and #6 coil. Clean injectors. Still had the same symptoms. I took it to mech shop #1. Meanwhile I spent hours online researching and determined it was the head gasket. The shop reasearched as well and agreed. They also showed only a misfire #6 code. They did not want the job-too time consuming. Drove it to shop #2. After 2 weeks there, they called and said they were finished but I need a new transfer case motor. Said the car was stuck in 4LO and I brought it in that way. Tested the switch and said the switch is fine. The only code now is transfer case motor code. I still have the original 3 lights on plus now a 4LO and 4WD light and a constant beep. I have not picked the car up because I cannot drive in 4LO and I did not bring it to them like that. They said they didn't do anything to cause that and are not doing anything to fix it further. He said he removed the axle and 3rd member for the head repair. Any suggestions as to what could have caused this? I don't beleive the motor went bad sitting there, I beleive something is not put back together correctly. Please help.

Sounds like you have a consumer problem with a shop moreso than a tech issue.
I'm not sure how you expect us to help much more than "go get em" support.
Sometimes the dealer is the best option.
$2900 for a HG sounds like you've already been taken once.

Probably-that tends to happen to girls. I was just looking for suggestions in the installation that may have caused that to happen or suggestions on how to fix it because the shop is stumped and I need my car back.

you may need to tow it to the dealer, document the correction to their error, and get an attorney.
i can't imagine a reason for removing the axle to work on the HG.
good luck
