Working with the tps
Hey guys,
Been having issues replacing my tps. I have followed all procedures I can find regarding calibration and adjustment of the sensor. My engine has good throttle response and acceleration is where it should be, however when I insert the paperclip to check my engine timing, the advance does not change the idle as it should. I don't hear the audible change in idle, and the timing does not change 2 degrees. It stays in the same spot. My paperclip is in fact jumping the two terminals in the diagnostic port, my engine light slowly flashes with the paperclip installed. Any idea what I may be doing wrong here? The engine I'm working on is the one on my vehicle info

If your jumping te1 and e1 then there shouldn't be an issue.
However as long as I have owned my rig when jumping te1 and e1 I never get a change in idle.
Never been a problem for me and there are other guys on the forum that experience the same thing.

The paperclip assures that you are at "base" timing, not affected by temperature, etc. While the manual notes that using the paperclip will "usually" change the timing, if the "correct" timing for your temperature, etc., happens to be base timing then nothing should change.
Like ksti, I've never gotten my truck to change timing with the paperclip. I suppose if I tried different temperatures, I might get it to change.

It should change and this is due to the throttle close circuit in the TPS. It is just a switch, can't remember the pins. I think the bottom 2. Throttle plate closed, switch closes. Open just a hair and it should be open all the way to full throttle. Idle advance is 15-25 degrees. Base timing is no advance from the ECU. You set it to around 5 degrees. The ECU does not know what your timing it just knows how to advance it through a scale. You are shifting the scale by setting it to 5 degrees advance base.
This switch may be bad but the rest of the TPS is working. Just makes your idle rougher and it hard to set base timing.
