Wont go into 3rd gear?!?
Well I just picked up an 89 with the 4cyl 5speed 4x4 for 400 bucks. The only prob is that it wont go into 3rd gear. I havent looked at it yet but what am I in for here? The clutch seems to be fine and all the other gears are smooth. Any suggestions or a direction before I begin? Thanks.

The motor in the truck is a 22re. So what years transmissions will fit? If I have to replace the tranny in this truck, I just want to know what year trucks I can scavange a tranny from. Can I use any tranny from a 4x4 4cyl truck? Thanks

Any W-series transmission should work as your bellhousing will bolt to it, as long as it's from a 4x4. Year specific would be at least 1986 to 1994 trucks/1995 4Runners with the 22RE engine. You may be able to go earlier or later based on how long the 22RE was used or how early the 22R shared the same transfer case. '86 to '95 for sure though. At least that gives you a starting point.

Only because you requested a starting point- have you checked the shift seat bushing? When mine went bad, it was difficult to get the shifter into first gear and once in, while letting out the clutch it would jump out of gear.
Might not be what's going on, but it is a quick check and it would suck to replace the whole tranny for a $10 part. I think Marlin sells a heavy duty replacement, but I used OEM.
Bob's write up for the 3rd Gen 4Runner was close enough to guide me through the process of replacement on my '89 2wd 5 speed:
