Where does this hose go?

I have an 88 4runner 22re automatic and noticed this hose did not have a home. my mechanic said he was not sure and that we needed to trace it back looking at my dad's engine. my dad has a 22re but it is a 94 with different pieces in there. the hose is coming from the P on the intake. the R and the E have a place they connect to but nothing for the P. Can somebody please tell me what to do. i will try to attach a pic of what i am talking about. thanks a mil!!

here is a link to where you can find them. i can't attach an image i guess it is too large.

my dad's 94 22re is connected to the same spot. i have an air rail, but not another spot for the P hose. they are all taken up with the other ones.

a very helpful guy on ttora said it needs to be connected to the purge port on the charcoal canister located near the passenger side fire wall but those hoses are all connected.

I posted that before realizing that you stated it was the hose located near the P. you can disregard that post.

I guess look at the length of the hose and look at everything within the reach of that hose. looks like it can't be too far from there.

that is the thing, there is nothing at all that i can see where it could go. everything is taken up. i am very baffled by this whole thing.

autozone has a great vacum line diagram. it saved my but putting my engine together. it is plain and simple. just go to autozone.com and punch in your vehicle year make and model, then click the repair info link, vehicle repair guides link, Driveability & Emission Controls link, then Vacuum Diagrams link. pick your engine and it should hook you up.
here, i'll try to link to it here...

http--autozone.com-servlet-UiBrokerForwardPage=-az-cds-en_us-0900823d-80-18-90-70-0900823d80189070.jsp

just copy and paste it to your browser and it should take you to the page that you pick your engine from.

Fig. 15: Emission system component layout and vacuum diagram-1988 22R-E engine From Autozone

Toyaholic, great link!

Looking at that diagram, looks like your hose got cut off, but it also looks like it goes to the charcoal canister.

i do the best i can. just hoping to hook a brother up. lord knows i owe you one eway. i struggled with that powersteering bracket for days.
there are other diagrams on there as well if this isn't the right one. i thought that an 88 would be the same as my 89 but i have the more complex setup.

the thing is, i already have the ports occupied on the charcoal canister. the one coming out of the purge port is hooked up to a spot on the intake manifold. see pic of what i am talking about.

does the truck run? if so does it run well? the hoses may be in the wrong place. you could try running them all just like in the diagram. get some extra hose if you need it and look at some of the other diagrams. the one posted may not be your exact one. take another picture with a higher resolution so we can zoom in and take it from above so that we can see everything and don't worry about putting your hand in the picture so you don't hide anythiing.

the truck runs good i guess but to be honest i wouldn't know what runs good and what doesn't if that makes sense. i am used to my 05 tacoma auto.

the truck runs good but it is very sluggish and am curious if i had the hoses where they need to go will that help it out at all. in other words i think it is capable of running better. i have never had a automatic 22re 4runner before. i had an 87 2wd truck that used to run like a raped ape. it was a 4speed, 22r and ran great. i will take some pics of the engine bay after dinner so you can see what i am talking about.

It looks like the charcoal canister is going to the wrong port. Attach the charcoal canister to the P port and see if it runs any better. It would probably be a good idea to plug that other port until you figure out what goes to it.

i am afraid of doing that for fear of messing something up. I have printed all of the diagrams that have been posted so far and will bring thme to my mechanic to see what he says. i guess i could color code these hoses so i know where they go if i have to put it back. here is a link to more pics of my engine. i took pics from different angles.

p.s. you all are probably going to flame me but what exactly does that charcoal canister do? what is its purpose? thanks

A charcoal canister stores fumes from the gas tank and then the engine burns them. It is a smog device that keeps gas vapors from escaping into the atmosphere.
