I agree keep it stock. Seems like no one appreciates their trucks straight from Toyota. I like the stock ones better.

Au contraire. I have (8) Toyotas, (4) of which are still bone stock.

Yea I guess these trucks can take you almost anywhere stock , but Not very comfortably .

I have some property near redding with some really big hills or mountains on it, with my 07 Expedition I can get to the top with no problem , this is with my wife and kids .

With the 4runner and the 3.0 I have to have the pedal floored and the truck is barley moving , made me feel very uncomfortable having my family with me and thinking it would leave me at any moment. This is why the 1uz for peace of mind while with the family and being able to use the 4runner anywhere.

The runner did make it but not comfortably.

not to sound mean or anything, but did you try downshifting?
I pull up pretty big hills in my pickup with the 22R... and i'm only at about half throttle in 3rd gear...

Since you say your not gonna be doing rock crawlin an what not just throw on some good 31" tires an your good to go! I used to take my 86 4runner through the river bed stock with street tires, ha i wouln't recomend that though, just sayin stock yotas are pretty capable.

This is my stock 89 4runner 3.0 5speed.. It has 31" A/T's and a winch/bumper. I can keep up with anything with 33" mud terrains no problem..No lockers, no SAS.no lift.

Driver has a lot to do with it I agree, his best bet is to just get out there and start with little stuff building experiance and confidence.

Man I tried eveything, the runner did or does make it up but just doesnt feel right .

Also the runner was packed with 4 of us ,camping gear ,food the dog inflatable raft some tools full tank of gas dog food and some other stuff .
Its about a mile and a half to the top and very steep dirt road ..

Also I agree the driver or experience with the truck is a big factor, and i will admit I dont have very much of that with this truck .
