Wheel fell off @ 70mph!

i was just going to mention that! I have a set of mud/snow tires that i have on a steel rim and i used the stock aluminum lugs with the taper at the end all winter. probably about 1700 miles, no problem.

just because it works doesnt mean that it should be used that way...
yes, they have a taper, but its only so that they can be used temporarily with the spare... not for full time driving...
the acorn lugs have a sharper taper on the very tip which helps seat them into the steel wheels better... and i know this because when i had my steelies on my truck i tried to use the stock lugs and they didnt seat right because the taper wasnt narrow enough to properly hold the rim in place... by the time i made it 20 miles into town to get the tires balanced 2 lugs had already came loose...

so whats the point in a full size spare if you cant run it for a long period of time? if i can only run it for 50 ish miles might as well slap a 13" donut on there a cruise till you get a tire...

also i had a similar experience, left front came off due to wore out wheel bearings and a toasted hub, whole thing worked its way off the spindle, and around i went funny thing was my first reaction when i saw it was, "i need to get a pic of this" and busted out the cell lol

I was actually on my way to work, and I knew my boss wasn't going to believe me if I didn't have some sort of evidence aside from the bent in rear quarter panel
lmao, my sister coming to the rescue took this pic from across the intersection on the way to pick me up you can see the tail of the truck sitting on the ground, and me sitting in the seat with the door open...

So, if the stock lugs weren't designed for the steel wheel, why would toyota give us aluminum wheeled guys steel spares? That would pose a huge liability on toyota if they were giving you a unsafe spare!

pics up tomorrow. Frankly i had several adult beverages last night when i got home and have been feeling a bit foggy all day today so no progress... but since i finished off all beverages in the house last night i will be able to wake up early tomorrow thinking straight!!!!
but the points that you guys brought up were right on point... Rusty wheel + short shank tapered mags + steel wheel = EPIC FAIL
I was soo pissed off at the guy flattening my tire i just ripped the spair down looked it over for 10 seconds, checked pressure, checked tread and threw the thing on the rear and tightnening it down with a 24" breaker bar... i even remember looking at the mag style lugs.. looking at the steel wheel and saying "god i hope these hold"... they didnt..
Do me a favor and just go to ANY parts store and pick up $10 worth of 6 acorn lugs and put them in your part box for the spare... Dont risk it... i whish i didnt..
I ran the truck over 700 miles in the past week trying to make required meetings (busy time) and on the return trip for a couple days of rest... well... instead i got to inspect how well my tire rolls at highway speeds... haha!

I hope that doesnt happen to me...can you imagine what a 37/13 bogger would be like if it fell off a vehicle at highway speeds!! Imagine the force of that thing heading toward a little geo metro, I bet the tire would win!!
In fact, I bet the truck would flip over if it fell off the front!!

Yes there is...........when the girl you know you don't want to marry tell you she is late. Trust me it was the longest drive to a pregnancy test.

you should not use the steel rim with the steel lug nuts thats whyim looking for a aluminum sr5 rim cause i dont have a spare, and i want a proper spare , when your off road and using the wrong type of lugs nut ie.. steel lugs may ruin and or pull through the AL2 ones, space junk is correctget the proper spar and proper rim just my 01 cents worth

Well I was aware of that and made sure that they set properly and did check the torque several times before i did any long drives. they held fine. Never had any weird vibrations while driving like they weren't centered. I was expecting to get new lug nuts (i might still) but the stock ones worked fine and held the wheel very well.
True.

like i said, not trying to argue, just saying what i know from experience...
and, as was posted, id go and pick up a set just for my spare... in fact, since im running my stock rims again, i keep the acorns in the truck (all 24 of em) just in case... call it my piece of mind...
