Wheel bearing/CV joint question.

Wheel bearing/CV joint question.
Can the grease packed around the bearings in the hub leak into the CV boot and subsequently out a crack in the CV boot?
I have a 4WD 4Runner this issue is on the front right. I'm hearing a mild grinding from up there while driving at various speeds. Not sure if its CV or Bearing. The CV boot has been broken for about 500 miles.
Thanks
Gary

Could be the CV outer gone dry, or the inner spindle bearings/bushing. If there's grease coming out of the spindle then you need to replace the rear spindle seal and the seal on the end of the CV halfshaft that mates with it. And check the wheel bearings for lack of lubrication.

Very similar not as loud as in those videos though. Its more subtle.
I wanted to make sure that the two (spindle/CV) were supposed to be separate.

They are separate.
However, by continuing to drive an open CV boot for 500 miles, you're effectively grinding it into replacement. They really are VERY resilient & last for years if kept greased & dry.

mine have been busted for almost 2 years now. Having manual hubs have probably helped my case though. Lets see if mine makes it one more winter. lol.

i think i'm having the same issue. i hear some grinding faintly when driving in 1st at about 10mph, but more so I can feel the vibration in the floor board with the heel of my foot. Not the CV because i have manual hubs and they aren't turning. just waiting to get out to my garage so i can lift the wheel off the ground and check the bearings. Let me know what you find out.

2nd gen in the air getting brakes all the way around & realize I should do axles while I'm in here (210,000 miles & shredded boots). Search brings me to this thread https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-w-pix-144314/ but pics are no longer visible (at least, on my machine)...Sounds like illustrations could save me lots of time & aggravation. Anybody kind enough to point me in the direction of a current thread?

Hey, thanks for the reply, limon32.
My hubs are disassembled while the rotors are being machined, so I'm going to screw with it tomorrow morning & see if I can mess with jacks/stands/bite my tongue just right & drag 'em out that way. If I'm successful, I'll post results. If not, I'll wait for rotors, reassemble and do it this way.
