What type of tranny fluid for 86 4 Runner auto with 22RE
I'm getting ready to replace the shift selenoids (spelling) on my daughters 86 4Runner with 22REengine Automatic Transmission. What is the type of transmission fluid that is required for this transmission? Dextron III, Mercron, ?? I asked at the local parts stores and no one knows for sure..I called the dealer, and naturally the parts guys said our Toyota fluid...Blech..
thanks in advance..

Actually, just get a new drainplug and gasket before draining it. $10 for both from the Dealership.
Most of the time those itty bitty 14mm drainplugs are stripped in the pan. Chasing the threads is a good idea too.
Hmmmm.... actually I've never done a trans fluid change on an 86. But the 90+ Runners use the same drainplugs as modern Corollas, and they're always messed up due to overtightening and re-using of the drain plug gasket.
