I used to have a 3.0 and the exhaust broke off right behind the cat. I was surprised how quiet it was like that so I didn't want to silence it much more so I just bought one of those cheap heavy steel cherry bomb tubes and used a fatter pipe. It sounded perfect. It wasn't too loud, just a little deeper and rumbly. And that cherry bomb will probably outlive the rest of the system, those things are pretty solid!

That always provides that good Japanese fart sound, and for the price of 2 years worth of morning coffee

If you want a loud cheap muffler, get a Jardine. I liked mine (I'm kind of an obnoxious person anyway lol) because with a 2.25 exhaust system it did give my truck just a little bit more punch. The noise would get pretty annoying in 4low crawling up a trail. That's why I have my super annoying stereo lol.

i think you are all crazy lol jk. flowmaster's are one of the best mufflers you can buy. flowmaster sounds better than any off the mufflers described above. imco and thrush are cheap wannabes that have somewhat of the same design, and sound. just cheap housings. as for flow! key word "flowmaster". im shure there is plenty of proof to back it up.

We used to run glasspacks backwards on old Impalas. the louvers inside the mufflers would cause the exhaust to pop and crackle when you took your foot off the accelerator.

Well this isn't the point of the thread but we seem to be on a roll of sorts here.
What are peoples opinions on quality mufflers/exhaust setups for 3.0's??

A glasspack will give you TONS more flow then a flowmaster...

i dont think so! maybe a 20yr old one. why do most peeps with high hp motors run flows??

the key word being. flowmaster. please show me some proof of a glass pack out performing a flowmaster. i dont think it can be found.

This is stupid. Flowmasters rule (and are indestructable), glasspacks are for mud trucks (or 16 year olds who just don't know any better), and for some reason alot of people think that a completely free flowing exhaust makes more power (or is cool). Give it a rest allready.

holy crap someone answer his damn question. K, I will.
Take it off if you can, pour gas in there and roll it around soaking the glass, light match, drop match in pipe. No this is not a joke that is the way.

Let's see we have:
1) Use a Flowmaster.
2) Use a Magnaflow.
3) Use a straight pipe and run rich.
4) Install the glass pack backwards.
5) Burn the glass with gas.
I'm adding the following: turn the screw in on the dashpot by the throttle so it closes faster.
However, I've had good luck with #4: done it to a Scirocco (one 12" just behind the cat, installed normally, and one behind the axle mounted backwards) they both burnt out at about the same time and I'd get a 12" flame out the pipe during a red-line shift.
My 88 has a flowmaster on it but it doesn't 'pop'... it 'burbles' while slowing down in gear.
But if you've got to have that 'rice' sound, the best place to start is with a big spoiler and work your way down.

guys guys guys...come on..calm down...Machabees...if you want the popping sound..and a VERY low tone at idle...just get a header..(i have flowtech..its like..old as hell..but is holdnig up well) and just run a header...no pip of any kind..just a header..it dumps riht under the driver seat of my '80...its the loudest truck in town hands down...EVERYBODY knows its me when i role up to a party...or roll up to the mud run...my friends tell everybody to stand back when i pull up..my yota is small..not lifted (only on 31" SS TSL's) but it is the best truck in mud..until it gets into ruts from the guys with 49" IROK's...(i envy them)..yea..just run straightpipes...a SHORT straightpipe if you dont have a header...if you have a header..just run that and nothing else..LOUD AS HELL!!!!!!!!!

drive around till the truck is warmed up and glasspack is hot, then go to car wash and spray water into it and on it, the temp diff will do the trick. installing backwards works. running duals and installing two different length ones, staggered will work better. the closer to motor the louder.
