Trying to set timing and engine dies

Hey guys, the last time I tried to set the timing, when I plug the hoses that go to the vacuum advance my engine dies. One of the hoses has no vacuum but the one that does kills the engine.
I just have the timing set to 0 with the hoses plugged to the vacuum advanced.
Am I doing something wrong?

Any advice besides get a new vacuum advance?
Before I replaced the HG the engine temp was always about 1/4 up. Now it's almost at 1/2 all the time.
Judging by my gas guage, I'm not getting good mpg's....
I have new aem wideband kit that I was going to use to help me set my carb but I haven't installed that yet

is the vacuum advance bell on the distributor leaking air? not toyota, but we used to pull the distributor and suck on the hose fitting on the bell, to check for leaks and see if it was advancing the plate that the points fastened to.

Both connections on the vacuum advance don't hold vacuum. If I leave the vacuum line that has vacuum connected to the vac advance and plug the other port with my finger, the engine rpm rises slightly.
I ordered another dizzy off eBay that's supposed to have a working vacuum advance but the damn person just created the label and hasn't shipped it yet.
I hate it when people on ebay or Amazon create a shipping label just so they can mark the item as shipped. I guess they don't think that people like me track the shipping details and know when they actually ship things out.

you'll have to run it with the vacuum plugged... some vacuum advance distributors also have a mechanical advance component... with the vacuum plugged off, does the timing light show timing advance increases, when the engine rpm increases?

is the factory procedure to set timing at zero with the vacuum hoses plugged?

I haven't checked if the timing rises with the rpm jump since I can't run it like that. The mechanical advance tests out cool.
I can't plug the hoses to set the timing because the engine turns off if I plug the hose that has vacuum.

you have a hose going to the distributor, that when plugged kills the engine? that doesn't sound right, because afaik the distributor bell is a sealed unit, not much different than plugging up the vacuum line.

maybe the idle is set too low? or base timing at idle is wrong... i guess we'll find out when the new distributor gets there.

Yeah, a guy on another forum told me since I have a vacuum leak my engine is supposed to run at higher rpm and it was (1k rpm) but when I installed my mini tachometer I saw that and lowered the rpms.
I guess they are to low. My timing is set at 0 right now with the hoses connected or disconnected. I should have the distributor on Tuesday and I'll update this then

I installed the new to me working distributor and it turned on fine but I had to hold the gas down a little. I adjusted the idle speed screw so it stays on but it idles at 1100rpm and if I lower the idle speed screw more I hear a click in the carb and the engine will stall.
If I adjust the Idle screw low enough to its right before the engine wants to stall, the engine will surge and I hear the same click type sound from the carb before the rpms drop.
Any ideas?

does it run it at idle with the air cleaner off of the engine? see if it's easier to identify where the noise is coming from, just don't get a backfire to the face, lol

sounds like the timing still can't be set correctly.

I didn't try it with the air cleaner off but it does run fine with the two hoses that go to the distributor plugged and the idle drops when I remove them from the vacuum advance.
The only way to verify the timing is correct is by putting the engine at TDC/ 0* on the crank pulley and making sure the dot on the cam gear is at 12 o clock right?
I'm starting to have doubts I set the timing chain correctly. Thanks osv.....

that would confirm that it's all lined up correctly??? makes sense to me.

I'll have it at 0 like the FSM says with the hoses plugged. I just need to figure out this carb/idle problem I have.
I remember seeing a picture of what each screw on the carb did but I can't find it.
I should probably also install the aem wide band I have since I'm not carb tuning pro.
I wanted to work on my truck today but I'm having a small wind storm with lots of dust/dirt. Not very healthy to be outside.... normally I'd pull the truck into garage but I'm in the middle of detailing my black suv.... in the middle of a dust storm lol
