truck fire.

I second letting the electrician do it... especially if your insurance is forking out the cash. With a fire, there's no clue how much damage was done until you open it up. Taking off the entire dash along with rewiring is a huge project. If you think you've got what it takes, more power to ya!
I remember seeing on different threads that the gauge cluster needs different wires based off the year. You might have a find the exact year of your vehicle to wire it correctly (or dealer parts...). If the gauge cluster is bad, same goes or you might have issues with the CEL and/or gauges not reading right. You can search, you'll find tons of these threads.

Man that sucks, hope it all turns out for you.
PS about not having a good pick & pull. We have one wrecking yard in town, when someone totals a yota, it's like vultures circling a kill when it gets to the yard.

If you are going to swap entire harness I would suggest removing the fenders as it makes accessing thru the firewall and routing along the inner fender easier.
On a 89-95 model it works best for me to start on the passenger side and remove the dash from passenger side and work your way over to the drivers side. It has been along time since I removed the actual dash pad so cant remember any tips there.
I can swap a harness alot quicker then doing a head gasket. All of the connectors are usually color coded and when the harness is stretched into where it belongs, the connectors are going to be really close to where they need to be. It isnt as intimidating as it first seems.
The clips on the inside of the firewall can be brittle so would have some good zip ties for the broken ones. The clips are a white "T" that basically looks like the wire harness is held on with electrical tape.
Hopefully your replacement harness they pulled the clips out of the firewall and you can just pop them back in.
Part Nuumber tag.
"T" clip. Also trying to show you roughly where tag is located. This is on an 84, but is about the same as yours.

So... I know it's been awhile since an update but that's cause I just stared at it for 8 months. But today I put in the new harness, dash, windshield fuse box, steering column, ignition switch pretty much everything... And it's alive I drove it! It's amazing! I forgot how much I love this truck! I'm ecstatic! Hell yes lots if hard work and pulling other trucks apart but I did it! Pics soon to come!

Long story short, I had wired a nitrous kit with a 0 gauge wire and than had a fuse block than another fuse block/splitter and ran the kit from the splitter. with room for expansion. Well where I had my stereo installed, they thought well I will just tap into the 0 gauge with a 2 gauge, wrap it around and tape it. Well needless to say it caught the back seat on fire in the trunk where the amps were at. They didn't do like I told them to so now I am that much richer lmao. But no one was hurt and insurance covered the damage. I am much happier with my older truck TBH. I can fix everything myself and improve what I want for how much I spent on that car.

Wow.. I wouldn't expect to see a fire from an untouched harness...
As I have most of my 4Runner apart and I'm working on it.. do you guys recommend for me to pre-empt a fix? I would be demoralized if I put all of it back together and this kind of thing happens
PS: At the minimum I guess i should carry a fire extinguisher....

Yeah fires in these trucks are very, very rare.
Awesome work with the truck ranger! The before and after pics are just incredible, that's an amazing job you did. Great thing is about these trucks is that fires rarely hurt the engine, the'll still run after a fire!
If you guys watch Top Gear, you'll get a kick out of this. They drop the European version of our truck, the Hilux, in the ocean, set it on fire, bang it up, and put it on top a a skyscraper and drop it hundreds of feet. It's hilarious and it still runs.

Hey thanks! It was an insane process just chock full of learning! I was surprised at how easily it went back together, the hardest part was taking out the fire damaged stuff and finding all the stuff that was damaged. I ended up just completely rebuilding from the firewall to the shifter. I put all gray interior in and it used to be blue so I changed it up a little bit. I was able to successfully integrate a cruise control system from the donor 4runner I did everything that I possibly could it was totally fun!
