Trouble codes
Can anyone point me to a write up on trouble codes? Specifically how to obtain them, and what each one means. This is for a 92 p/u 4wd with 22re and manual tranny. Thanks

By the fusebox on the pasendger side under the hood there is a little box. Open it and you will see a TE1 and E1. just put a jumper wire in the slots and watch the dashboard and count flashes.
Code 11 Momentary interruption in power supply to ECU (electronic control unit or computer) up to 1991
Code 12 Engine revolution signal missing
Code 13 Rpm signal to ecu missing above 1000 rpm
Code 14 Igniter signal to ecu missing
Code 16 A/T control signal missing from ecu
Code 21 Main oxygen sensor signal fault
Code 22 Water temperature sensor circuit fault
Code 23 and 24 Intake air temperature signal fault
Code 25 Air/fuel ratio LEAN
Code 26 Air/fuel ratio RICH
Code 27 Sub-oxygen sensor signal or heater circuit fault
Code 28 No.2 oxygen sensor/heater signal fault
Code 31 and 32 Air flow meter circuit or Vacuum sensor signal fault
Code 34 and 36 Turbo-charging pressure signal fault
Code 35 Altitude compensation sensor signal fault
Code 41 Throttle position circuit fault
Code 42 Vehicle speed sensor circuit
Code 43 No starter signal to the ecu
Code 51 AC signal on; DL contact off (in trany shifter with diagnostic connector jumped)
Code 52, 53 and 55 Knock sensor fault
Code 71 EGR system malfunction
Code 72 Fuel cut solenoid signal fault
Code 78 Fuel pump control signal fault
Code 81, 83, 84 and 85 TCM communication fault
On my 88 build I have pictures showing different things you might run into.

A code 21 would be two. flashes and an pause then a single flash. If you have multiple codes it will flash them as well. It will keep flashing all of the codes untill you turn the key off.
To get the codes, it is the same steps as setting your timing.
Key off, insert wire and turn key to on position. You donthave to start the motor.
Getting a good conection in the box can be a trick sometimes.

OK. I found some time today to check the codes on my truck and here is what I found: code 24 (intake air temp signal fault), code 31 (AFM or vacuum sensor fault) and code 42 vehicle speed sensor fault. Now, here is the tricky part. The PO had someone swap the motor in this truck with a motor from an 89. For some reason the "mechanic" not only swapped the motor, but also the wiring harness. That means that the electronic speedo doesn't work - I assume that is the speed sensor code and it doesn't matter to me - if that is what it is. The other two I have no idea how critical they are and what to do about them. Any ideas? I checked the AFM recently per 4crawlers instructions and it tested fine. I have just replaced the circuit opening relay and the tps and have not reset the codes since doing that.

My girlfriend has a 2002 rav4. the yellow/orange light came on the dash about 3 mons ago. we haven't done anything about it until now because her state inspection is up. after going to Autozone, they hooked up a meter to the car and a code of P1135 showed on the machine. It turns out that two different mechanics tried wiping the code and it came right back on shortly after. They are both stating that its the Oxygen Sensor. (bank 1) and that it would be upwards of $235 for the part and $65 to replace. Well I am somewhat mechanical and I have learned through research that it is not that difficult to change. Plus I have a friend who is a mechanic who can help. My question is how difficult is it to change? Also, I am getting a very wide price range online ($50-$180) for this part and I am very confused as to which to go with. If there's anything you can suggest that would be great. The car is still at the shop and I have to give the mechanic an answer by days end. Thank you very much.
