Transmission won’t go into first gear
I have a 1984 Toyota pickup 4x4. It was shifting fine then one day it got hard to go into first. Now it doesn’t go into first at all at a stop just grinds. If I’m coming to a stop and downshift to first gear it will slide into first sometimes. I changed shifter seat, clutch, master cylinder, slave cylinder, checked for cracks on pedal still does same thing. Also when I had the tranny out I could put it in 1st gear and the shaft would turn like it’s supposed to.

Have you adjusted the clutch pedal?

I have adjusted it out more than it was to test it but nothing changed. It all started as just popping out of first then went to this. That’s why I changed the seat. Actually 2 times I put the marlin crawler hd one in

Probably not the issue, but I had a Toyota mechanic tell me years ago that when they put fluid in the transmission/transfer case of these trucks at the dealer they always add a half-pint of ATF to the gear oil. I can't remember off hand whether they call for 80-90w or what, but I have always added a half-pint of ATF when I change gear oil since and it makes them shift much better cold. Also try shifting into either second or reverse then without letting the clutch out put it in first. This often makes it go into first better when it is hard to shift in when you are stopped.

I have tried the second and reverse to first it doesn’t work. Now it won’t even go into gear when engine is off I’m thinking it may be internal. Gonna start looking for a new transmission maybe upgrade to the w56
